Incredi-bauble Christmas: Gen Z ditch traditional festive decorations with over three quarters declaring them ‘boring’

With Christmas around the corner, over a third (34%) of Brits are breaking away from tradition by shunning conventional decorations, which they view as ‘boring’.

With two thirds (64%) agreeing their Christmas tree is an opportunity to express themselves, NOW – with the help of Katherine Ryan – is giving away limited-edition Box Set Baubles inspired by the most popular shows on NOW, including Succession, The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, And Just Like That, The Last of Us and True Detective: Night Country.

The beautifully crafted bauble designs take inspiration from the iconography of these must-watch shows, including the House of the Dragon’s Targaryen sigil, Logan Roy’s coveted Succession helicopter, the Sicilian Moors Head from The White Lotus, and Carrie’s infamous shoe as seen in And Just Like That, to name a few. This comes as almost half of those polled say they plan to step up their Christmas tree game this year, and NOW has just the Box Set, with a merry twist to help them do just that.

New research from NOW reveals over three-quarters (77%) of Brits own personal baubles that have a special meaning to them, showing the importance placed on having a unique tree that expresses their creativity and interests.

This shift in preferred Christmas tree styles is even more evident amongst younger generations, with two thirds (62%) of Gen Z and Millennials favouring decorations that mirror their hobbies.

With nearly nine in ten (88%) of Brits planning to catch up on TV over the festive period – and nearly a quarter (24%) planning on watching at least 24 hours’ worth! – the limited-edition bauble set is the perfect accompaniment for TV fans this Christmas.

Jamie Schwartz, Director of Brand and Marketing at NOW, said: “Our research uncovered the trend that people are seeking Christmas decorations that reflect their passions and interests, including their favourite TV shows. This inspired us to launch these limited-edition baubles, based on some of the most popular shows on NOW.”

Katherine Ryan, Comedian, said: “This Christmas, I’m ditching my traditional baubles and decking my halls with something a bit more me: one-of-a-kind ornaments that will set my tree apart this year and reflect my love for all things quirky and fun, just like my favourite TV shows. I can’t wait to hang up the beautifully crafted Moors Head from The White Lotus on my tree and am pleased that a few lucky winners will be in for a chance to win NOW Box Set Baubles to do the same.”

Adele Gregson, Expert Christmas Tree Decorator and Founder of The Christmas Company, said: “Decorating a Christmas tree is a special tradition that brings the true magic of Christmas into our homes. Recently, we’ve seen an increasing number of clients take a less conventional route when it comes to their choice of decorations. Whether that’s teddy bears or dinosaurs, to their favourite TV shows, people want to have more personal options that reflect their passions. Christmas is all about joy, and people want to inject fun and personality into their tree, giving it a distinctive look that feels unique to them.”

Adele shares her expert tips on how to make your Christmas tree stand out with this year’s trends:

It’s all about oversize. There’s a huge demand for large baubles this year as they fill out the tree and give a more extravagant wow factor look. However, if you’re looking to adopt this trend, you don’t need to overhaul your entire bauble collection. Simply disperse some bulkier decorations throughout your tree to play with scale and make an impact.
Say goodbye to red and gold. Teal, toffee and monochrome are big trends this season, with more people favouring unusual colours over a traditional colour palette.
Go bold with pattern and texture. Checked decorations are in – from softer colour palettes to bold retro styles. However, experiment with patterns and textures that suit you best! Whether that’s velvet, polka dots, striped, floral or knitted, there are so many options out there to have fun with.
Make things personal and fun. This is your Christmas tree, and it should feel that way. Choose unique baubles that reflect your passions and interests. Whether that’s decorations inspired by your favourite music, TV shows, food, celebrities and more. The personalisation of baubles has also been huge in the past two seasons, with the family name or crest being an incredibly popular addition. Oversized teddy bears are also in demand this year, alongside a Gingerbread theme complete with ice creams, gingerbread men and cakes.
It’s about that base. Bases are becoming increasingly popular as they can give extra height and finish the tree beautifully. If you want to jazz things up even more, choose a decorative base made from either wicker, velvet, bamboo or even a honeycomb style.
