Announcing the Spring/Summer 2024 programme at The Coronet Theatre.

Throughout spring and summer 2024, The Coronet Theatre presents a truly global programme of original arts from leading artists, including work from Japan, Ireland, Singapore, Korea, Italy, France and, in a first for The Coronet, Taiwan, with a month-long festival.

“Astonishingly, 2024 marks ten years since we moved from the Print Room to this amazing building. One of our missions in making The Coronet Theatre was to find and present extraordinary international talent that is rarely seen outside its cultural home, with its new and different ideas about what art is, or can be. This season will reflect exactly that. A non-stop line-up of innovative and exciting artists who work with visual art, dance, music, theatre, technology and entertainment in often overlapping and complex combinations.

The companies that are coming will bring a whole raft of exciting new ideas and insights stemming from their individual artistic heritage, traditions and styles, making this an eye- opening, fresh and audacious programme.” Anda Winters, Artistic Director

T.H.E Dance Company

DANCE
Rethinking Co-Existence
A triple bill by Kuik Swee Boon, Kim Jae Duk and The Human Expression Dance Company, Singapore

Fri 9 – Sat 10 Feb 2024

T.H.E Dance Company return to The Coronet, following 2022’s sold-out production PheNoumenon, with a triple bill of UK premieres. Present, Pure and Un-form investigate
existence, the complexities and tensions of social interactions and identity, both as artists and as individuals. Featuring two pieces by Kuik Swee Boon and one by resident
choreographer Kim Jae Duk, expect an evening of beautiful, electric, heart-pounding dance.

Described as a dance company ‘at the top of its game’, T.H.E Dance Company are a household name in Singapore led by celebrated choreographer Kuik Swee Boon,
performing to critical acclaim around the world. “T.H.E Dance Company continues to transform, evolve and respond to disruption of the current times and sensibilities” –
Stephanie Burridge, The Straits Times

PRESENT – Kim Jae Duk’s fourth creation for the T.H.E. continues his highly physical, music-driven signature style. Jae Duk’s existential exploration is nuanced with
undertones of dark humour that heighten the urgency of his artistic investigation. Two people are locked in a physical dialogue that discusses existence and being. One looks for reasons, the other seeks value. How far will this discussion take them and what is their relationship? “Edgy, current and fiercely independent” – The Straits Times

PURE – is driven by the perpetual cycle of tension and compromise that accompany every form of social interaction. Inspired by the existential adage ‘l’existence précède
l’essence (existence precedes essence)’, this stunning duet examines the complexities of living together as both a unit of family and society. “Exquisite… [the dancers] seemed both futuristic and otherworldly, and were lovely to watch […] a very successful wayto demonstrate the differing viewpoints contemporary dance can offer.” – Luisa Ryan, scenestr

UN-FORM – One of Kuik Swee Boon’s most intimate and revealing works, Un-form began as personal, burning questions concerning the validity and value of his role as an artist to his own existence, and within the context of society. Devising solos as a response, the dance artists delve deep into their memories and experiences, inviting audiences to embark on the same journey of self-contemplation. “The piece is touching, provocative and relatable on so many levels! Exceptional!” – Helen Gramotnev, Brisbane Stage
