£17BN WORTH OF FAMILY HEIRLOOM JEWELLERY LOST IN THE UK

PASSING ON a family heirloom to the next generation is a special moment and something to be cherished, however new research has found that Brits are clumsy when it comes to holding onto their jewellery for the long term.

A survey from London cornerstone jewellery brand, ABELINI, has revealed that tragically almost 1 in 3 (31%) Brits have lost a family heirloom or a sentimental piece of jewellery, with the average cost of each heirloom totalling £310 – meaning there is currently a staggering £17 billion worth of sentimental jewellery missing in the UK.

The research also found that men are more likely to misplace their heirlooms, and on average this happens just 13 months after receiving jewellery that should be treasured for a lifetime, compared to only 15 months for women.

Looking at the special milestone moments, it is revealed that wedding days peak as the perfect time for loved ones to gift treasured and valuable sentimental jewellery, as 34% of Brits are most likely to receive a family heirloom on their wedding day.

Other special milestone moments that see Brits receiving sentimental treasures from loved ones include big birthdays, with 18th Birthday’s (26%) second on the list and 21st birthdays (19%) third.

Fourth on the list of most likely occasions to receive a family heirloom is another big lifetime event – becoming a parent, when 17% of people said they had received a family heirloom to pass onto the next generation.

This was followed by the day Brits get engaged (16%), which triggers loved ones to pass down their family ring when the new generation of young love birds get down on one knee.

In fact, it’s rings that are the most likely type of jewellery to be passed down from generation to generation, with 57% of people reporting they had even given or received a heirloom ring.

Nilesh Rakholia, director at ABELINI, said: “Family heirlooms are a great way to feel connected to loved ones. We have customers telling us about jewellery that has been passed from generation to generation and that have been on some incredible journeys, which makes it even more upsetting when people lose their special items.

“When considering which family heirloom to pass down it is important to think of sentimentality. If a piece of jewellery holds a special memory for you it makes it all that more impactful when passing it down to the next generation. When taken care of properly, by cleaning regularly both at home and by professionals, your treasured family jewellery can last from generation to generation and can be a great way to keep family connections close for years.

If you are looking for the perfect gift for your new partner, ABELINI offer a stunning range of jewellery, sure to make light up anyone’s face.
