Lockdown’s Life Lessons: MyTutor launches drop-ins for lessons not taught on the syllabus

Over the course of the pandemic and lockdown, students have been learning lessons in life, deviating from learning traditional subjects. From witnessing people around them dealing with losing their jobs to having more of a hands on approach to daily household tasks, the nation’s kids have spent less time in the classroom and more time learning important life skills.

MyTutor recognise that kids are seeking knowledge outside of the curriculum, and are offering a host of free drop-in sessions over the summer holidays covering off different interesting topics, with the aim of enriching students with advice and tips that are not on the syllabus. Examples include:

  • Getting the most out of sixth form/college
  • Using science in the real world
  • An introduction to Francophone culture for GCSE French
  • How to tackle a creative writing question in GCSE English

MyTutor have conducted research looking into kids’ attainment following sixteen months of disruption and has found undeniably that the pandemic has negatively affected students’ grades with a quarter of UK parents reporting their child has seen a visible decline in educational progression and is now scoring lower, with 59% experiencing a decline in motivation. MyTutor hopes to rectify this as best as they can over the summer holidays by providing an engaging series of drop ins and tutoring sessions to help those who are lacking motivation over the summer holidays.

Key Stats:

  • 59% (6,473,000) of parents agree that since COVID-19, their child has fallen out of a routine with regards to their education and their motivation to work has declined
  • 42% agree that their child has the highest levels of stress they have observed in his/her lifetime

Bertie Hubbard, co-founder of EdTech platform MyTutor, discusses the role that EdTech can play in helping struggling students:

“The last fifteen months have been unbelievably tough year on teens and parents alike with months out of school, exam cancellations, not seeing friends and worrying about Covid-19. As schools open again, catching up on lost learning and prepping for assessed work next term will bring another set of challenges for teens.

They’re in more need than ever for some support and reassurance with their studies, and that’s exactly what our tutors offer. Our tutors are all from UK universities, and because they’re just a few years older they can easily relate to what teens are going through. With their dedicated one-to-one support, teens get some much-needed reassurance and come out with a stronger self-belief – 88% say that lessons made them feel more confident.

Rather than replacing teachers with robots, the biggest power of EdTech lies in enhancing person-to-person learning. At MyTutor, we provide online tuition that raises kids’ grades, boosts confidence and helps them fulfil their potential in life. Because it’s online, kids get access to amazing tutors from across the country, rather than whoever’s nearby. As there’s no travel for the student or the tutors, it also saves time and money travelling – reducing the cost and stress involved for parents.”
