Labour Lord Glasman: Sir Keir Starmer has six months to prove he has got the right stuff to be Prime Minister

Sir Keir Starmer has six months to prove that he has got what it takes to be Prime Minister, a leading Labour peer who is close to figures in 10 Downing St has said.

Lord Glasman, the founder of the Blue Labour group which represents Labour supporters in areas targeted by Reform UK, told GB News’ Chopper’s Political Podcast that Starmer “may or may not” survive as leader at the next election expected in 2029.

The peer said: “What I see with him is that he genuinely wants to be a national leader. … he’s making a drastic transition from being basically a human rights lawyer to being a national politician, being a prime minister. The next six months will be decisive for him.”

Asked by presenter Christopher Hope whether he will lead the party into the next election, he said: “He may or he may not. That’s always true of politicians, by the way. Nobody predicted Thatcher going, Blair went. You know they come in they [go].”

Lord Glasman also paid tribute to Yvette Cooper, who was moved from Home Secretary to Foreign Secretary in the reshuffle, saying that he was much more Eurosceptic than previously thought.

He said: ” She represents a Yorkshire constituency where Reform is very strong and the sentiment of Euroscepticism has been very strong for a long time. She has engaged with that. She’s talked to that.

“So I actually think that she’s a tougher prospect at the Foreign Office. The way that I see it is that in the next six months, we’ve got to really get tougher with France.”
