Valentine’s Day: 40% of Brits Think Lover has Let Themselves Go

It could be good news for singletons this Valentine’s Day, as new research released today by SmileDirectClub, reveals that 1 in 4 Brits would like to make their partner more kissable, and a staggering 40% think their partner has let themselves go since they started dating.

The study by SmileDirectClub, the oral care leader with the first medtech platform for teeth straightening, also revealed that 1 in 4 (25%) Brits have brought up with their partner (or considered discussing) enhancing their appearance, with the biggest bugbear being teeth and oral hygiene. A quarter (25%) of brits said they would like to have their partner’s teeth straightened or whitened, 17% said they have fallen out of love due to bad breath, and 47% admitted breath would be an absolute relationship turn off.

Top treatments Brit’s would like their partner to have include:

1. Teeth whitening and straightening

2. Weight loss

3. Nose job / reshaping

4. Liposuction

5. Breast enlargement or reduction

6. Anti-aging / facelift

7. Counselling or psychotherapy

8. Holistic treatments

9. Lip fillers

10. Hair transplant

Women are more likely to think their partner has let themselves go (41% women vs 37% men); men are more likely to have fallen out of love with their partner because of their looks changing (21% vs 14%); and men are also more likely to buy their loved one a makeover (14% vs 7%).

With Valentine’s Day gifts on the agenda, top gifts for 2021 include perfumes and aftershaves (36%), a makeover (10%), haircut or colour (10%), a gym pass or personal trainer, and teeth care (8%).

Dr. Jeffrey Sulitzer, Chief Dental Officer at SmileDirectClub comments: “It’s great to see that Brits are looking ahead to Valentine’s Day to celebrate a loved one. Oral health has come up as a key focus for British couples as they try to look and feel their best for their loved one. The most important thing for a Valentine’s Day kiss is making sure your oral health is in good standing, I always strongly recommend brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing once a day to keep your teeth and gums healthy.”
