Sunship’s UK Garage remix of Jhelisa’s ‘Friendly Pressure’ embraced by new generation on TikTok

Jhelisa and Sunship are enjoying success again with their UK Garage Anthem ‘Friendly Pressure’, which is blowing up on TikTok.

30 years since Jhelisa released her original version of ‘Friendly Pressure’ and 26 years since Sunship remixed it, the track has become a TikTok phenomenon and shaping up to be a summer hit.

Jhelisa & Sunship ‘Friendly Pressure (Into The Sunshine Mix)’ has ignited on TikTok in the last month, there are now over 40,000 video creations with 180 million views. Streams of the track are up 1000%, currently 250,000 a day and growing. The track reached No.6 in the TikTok Dance Chart and No.7 in the Spotify UK viral chart and is now in a dozen more viral charts around the world as the global influence and popularity of UK Garage surges higher.

Jhelisa, who GQ dubbed ‘Cosmic princess of soul’, has been marching through uncharted musical territories since the mid-1990s when she stunned audiences and critics with both her extraordinary voice and deliciously daring music. Music comes from a musical family and is the niece of funk pioneers Vicki Anderson and Bobby Byrd. Through the course of 4 solo albums released on seminal London label Dorado Records, Mississippi-born Jhelisa has journeyed through soul, trip hop, jazz, avant-garde, gospel and esoteric sonic experimentations. Jhelisa has been the go-to vocalist for the likes of Bjork, Massive Attack and The Shamen, and toured with James Brown, The Roots, Herbie Hancock, Sting and Chaka Khan. Her thrillingly genre-smashing approach to music subverts her sweet, sensual voice with emotionally raw, spiritually resonant lyrics and a musical sophistication seen nowhere else.

Sunship is Ceri Evans, who first released on legendary Factory Records with group Swamp Children in 1980, then later on as writer/performer of Brand New Heavies. He started out at Acid Jazz Records and then progressed to Dorado/Filter Records where he began to make his mark as Sunship when he released his MOBO Award winning self-titled debut album in 1997. This followed by ‘Is This Real’ a UK Garage album in in 1998, which cemented his presence in the UKG scene with tracks ‘Cheque One Two’ and ‘Try Me Out’. His most successful moment came from the Sunship remix of Sweet Female Attitude’s all time banger ‘Flowers’, which went to No. 2 in the UK chart. Then followed the Sunship remix of Mis-Teeq’s ‘All I Want’, which became another No. 2 hit, with more UK Garage hits came via Lonyo’s ‘Garage Girls’ and ‘Amighty Father. Sunship has remixed for Craig David, Christina Aguilera, Mary J Blige, Little Mix and is working with Tracey Ray and XANTHE in 2024.
