Tips on Finding the Perfect Van Conversion Project

We asked Dominic Hickman MD for We Buy Broken Vans about the key things that Brits should consider when looking for the perfect van conversion project, and he provides some top tips:

Budget

As with all projects, deciding on your budget is the first thing you need to start with when it comes to van conversions. Remember, buying/financing and the build itself is just the start – you need to factor in the overall cost of upkeep like replacing tyres and regular services when you hit those milestones. And what happens when an engine warning lights up? Keeping a rainy day fund aside for those sudden and unexpected repairs will help keep you out on the road without breaking the bank.

Make/Model

This is often one of the most asked questions when it comes to van conversion, and it’s a good one – the make/ model you decide on can affect everything from the size of your living space to fuel economy. Ultimately, this van will become your new home, so make sure you’re happy with it before you start your conversion project. Also, some engines require specialty mechanics and might cost more, so make sure to do your homework beforehand so you know exactly where to go and how much it’ll cost.

Height

Different vans have different interior standing heights which can change depending on conversion plans. For example, the interior standing height of a high roof Ford Transit is 4 inches taller than that of a high roof Merc Sprinter. Add in the 2 inch minimum needed for ceiling, floor and wall insulation additions and there will be a small but noticeable difference in the height of your new living space, so keep height in mind when looking for the perfect van for your conversion.

Usage

One of the key things to consider right at the start of your project is what your van is ultimately going to be used for. Do you want to live in it part-time or full time? What do you need to be able to stay in it year round? And where is it going to go? Can it handle winding roads in Wales and steep hills in Scotland? These kinds of questions can have a huge impact on everything including your make/model choice and final build plans. Figure out your “why” and that will help you decide which van is best for you.

Lifespan

Lifespan is always important when you’re buying any vehicle, so it’s important to really think ahead before you decide what to go for. How long do you plan on using it? Do you plan to sell it at some point? Diesel vehicles have a much longer lifespan than petrol which makes Sprinters (which are usually diesel engine) a good investment. And with the boom in staycations, resale values on conversion are in high demand so taking care of your van can really pay off in the long run.
