Responding to popular demand, atmospheric Indie rockers The Institutes release an updated version of fan favourite “INSIDE OUT” – rebooted with a new mix and strings arrangement, to celebrate the release of a stunning re-pressing of their debut album COLOSSEUMS, which will be available as a beautiful 180g heavyweight ‘splatter’ vinyl (out 17 March, via 42’s Records). With the first vinyl pressing selling out in 2022, the repressing is available pre-order now here.

Marking the new album reissue, the band have created a lush new version of “INSIDE OUT”, as a new digital single. Enhanced by a new string arrangement and layered with ethereal ambient soundscapes that build on a solid groove to an explosion of guitars. Speaking about the themes within the track and how this new version came together, Hally, co-songwriter and lead guitarist, says:

“[“Inside Out”] is an insight into the struggles of the modern-day adult – a search for the coping mechanisms of day-to-day commitments, that can feel empty and unrewarding, but inside the struggle there is hope, we just need to find it.

We’re all fans of the indie orchestral marriage of tunes such as Bittersweet Symphony, F.E.A.R, Whatever by Oasis but also the mood and journey Radiohead create with their arrangements… Myself and recent addition to the band, Alan Ferguson, wrote a string arrangement, working around the build of the song trying to achieve something more epic, without crossing the line and it sounding like a Disney score! The wonderful Julia Violinista kindly performed the arrangement, and we remixed the track with her added strings.”

“INSIDE OUT” will arrive with a brand new official music video, featuring a powerful leading performance from acclaimed Scottish actor Steven Cree (Outlander, Terminator: Dark Fate, Churchill, Maleficent). Introduced to the band by none -other than Robert Carlyle, Hally explains of the new visual collaboration:

“Out of the blue Scottish actor Robert Carlyle (Begbie in Trainspotting!) contacted us to tell us how much he loved the song and at the same time introduced us to his friend, and as we now know, all round top bloke and a fellow Scottish actor, Steven Cree, with a view to working on a film to go with the song.

This was a massive compliment, and we were over the moon. Over a few beers with Steven an idea formed to bring to life the story of “INSIDE OUT” on film, with Cree as the lead protagonist. We shot the film and Phil from our label 42’s Records suggested we update the recording to match the emotion contained in the film, and release this as a single… Steven Cree is a genius and perfectly conveys these raw emotions in his powerful leading performance in the accompanying film – the geezer deserves an Oscar.”

“INSIDE OUT” will be the final release from The Institutes’ debut album ‘COLOSSEUMS’, before the band head into the studio to record a set of new songs. Already written and demoed, these new tracks mostly remain unheard, apart from those that have managed to creep into the band’s current live set and will be showcased on the upcoming “INSIDE OUT” Tour. *****
Formed in December 2018, The Institutes have blazed onto the UK underground music scene on their own terms, signing to Manchester’s in 2020 and releasing their highly acclaimed debut album ‘COLOSSEUMS’. Hailing from Coventry, the 5-piece have built a solid and loyal following for their addictive mesmerising tunes.

Following the release of ‘COLOSSEUMS’, 2022 was a huge year for The Institutes. They kicked it off in style with an invitation from one of their heroes, Tim Burgess, to appear on his legendary Twitter Listening Party and chat about the story behind their debut album. This led to a sold-out hometown show at The Kasbah in Coventry and was followed by their first USA tour, playing 20 shows in 2 weeks including packed out gigs at tastemaker festivals SXSW in Austin and New Colossus in New York, plus a SOLD OUT headlining show in Los Angeles. The band returned home and continued to tour across the UK, selling out Manchester and their hometown of Coventry and topped off the summer with festival appearances at Isle Of White, Camper Calling and Shiiine On Weekender festivals.

While the band’s musical output is too eclectic to pigeonhole, it wears its influences proudly on its sleeves, sitting somewhere between shoegaze and indie rock, with a nod in the direction of Fleetwood Mac harmonies and The Byrd’s psychedelic jangles. At times raw, and at others refined, their sound is filled with candid and vulnerable, poetic lyrics on a bed of layered guitars, soaring howls and a solid grooving rhythm section, which has seen them gain plaudits for their album and their live shows worldwide. The Institutes can switch from chaotic but ecstatic melodic wonder to delicate brazen honesty in the blink of an eye.

Standby for news on the 2nd Album from The Institutes, due later in 2023…
