Study Reveals the Most Expensive Student Halls in 2022

London School of Economics and Politics – which is ranked the second most expensive University Halls Accommodation (£281) – estimates students should allow £1300 – £1400 per month for all living expenses, including accommodation, travel, food, laundry and other personal expenses.

While students who live away from home and in London receive a higher Maintenance Loan the average Maintenance Loan is approximately £5,820 a year, resulting in the majority of students costed out of University Halls.

University of St Andrews has the most expensive university halls accommodation outside of London and ranks eighth overall as it would cost students £195 on average.

The university came under fire recently as 140 students were being offered housing in halls of residence in Dundee – 14 miles north of the campus – due to an affordable housing crisis in the historic Fife town.

Durham University completes the top 10 most expensive university halls accommodation, costing students on average £187 a week. Students recently protested over claiming the university ‘failed to address’ the cost-of-living crisis facing students, with some rent increasing by 150 percent and students being forced to camp outside estate agents to secure accommodation.

At the other end of the scale, University of Leicester is deemed the most cost effective for their halls of residence, costing students just over £120 a week on average. This is over £180 cheaper than the most expensive residency in our study.

The University is one of only 10 University featured in the study that has kept the price of its accommodation the same and not increased it, which will be music to many students ears.

Queen University of Belfast also features in the top most affordable student halls as students are expected to pay just £124 a week on average for their residency.

The University was also in the news recently as it’s expected to spend £8m making extra cost-of-living payments to student and most staff to help with rising costs.

Northumbria University (£122), University of Aberdeen (£124) and University of East Anglia (£125) complete the top five most affordable student halls in 2022.

Further analysis showed the universities which have increased their student halls prices the most in the last year. Two universities in Oxford, Oxford Brookes University (£24) and University of Oxford (£23) have increased their weekly rental prices the most, taking first and second place.

Ulster University (£22), Imperial College London (£18) and University of Exeter (£18) complete the five university with the highest increase in weekly rent price.

James Brown, Director at Protect Your Bubble, commented:

“With students already worried about moving away from home and starting a new academic year, in addition to the cost of food and energy bills increasing, it’s important students look into which halls of residences are best suited to their needs.

“Alongside this, it’s important students ensure the equipment they use for their work is covered in the event of damage, theft or mechanical breakdown. Further education can be stressful enough without the possibility of losing your devices and work unexpectedly.”
