New independent businesses, growing visitor numbers and a packed programme of summer events are helping drive the continued revival of one of Greater Manchester’s oldest and most successful markets.
Home to more than 50 independent traders and more than 750 years of trading history, the market has become a flagship example of Stockport’s wider transformation, attracting new businesses, visitors and investment into the heart of the town centre.
The continued momentum comes as Stockport Town Centre experiences sustained growth in visitor numbers, with nearby Merseyway welcoming over 10 million visits in 2025 and increasing numbers of independent businesses choosing to invest in the area.
Over the past 12 months the market has welcomed Stockport Provisions and The Pet Grocer and seen artist Kate O’Brien expand into a larger stall.

One of the latest additions to the market is The Brick Prof, a specialist LEGO stall which opened in March 2026 and has already built a loyal following among collectors, families and nostalgia-loving shoppers. The business specialises in retired and hard-to-find LEGO sets and has quickly become one of the market’s most eye-catching new arrivals.
Lou’s Café, which took over the long-established John O’Mara’s café unit last year, has also brought fresh energy to the Market Hall while continuing the market’s tradition of independent cafés serving traders, visitors and the local community.
Now, a packed programme of summer events is set to build on that success, bringing thousands more visitors into the historic Market Place through a series of food festivals, family events, vintage spectaculars and community celebrations.
Leading this year’s programme is the launch of Saturday Snack Down, a brand-new food themed free monthly event taking over Stockport Market Place from June to October.

The first event, on Saturday 20 June, will see the Market Place transformed into a Mad Hatter’s Street Tea Party, with entertainment, food and surprises designed to bring people of all ages into the town centre for a day out with a difference. The new event is the latest sign of the growing energy surrounding Stockport Market and the wider Market Place, which has become one of Greater Manchester’s most talked-about destinations for independent businesses, culture, food and experiences.
Alongside Saturday Snack Down, the Market Place will host a packed programme of returning favourites throughout the year including Foodie Friday, Makers Market, STOCK Party, Armed Forces Day celebrations and Stockport Pride, bringing thousands of people into the town centre.
The summer calendar also includes Stockport Vintage Spectacular on Sunday 12 July, when the iconic Victorian Market Hall will be transformed by vintage specialists So Retro Events into a celebration of all things retro. Vintage fashion, vinyl, jewellery, homeware and collectables will sit alongside live swing music, retro entertainment, free vintage bus rides, close-up magic and pop-up experiences throughout the day. Tickets are available now via Eventbrite.

Councillor Micheala Meikle, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration and Skills at Stockport Council, said:
Stockport Market proudly sits at the heart of our town centre and its continued success shows what is possible when you bring together people, independent businesses and local character.
We’re proud to see the Market confidently evolving year on year. New events are drawing in first time and repeat visitors, while long-established traders continue to thrive alongside new independent businesses choosing to make Stockport their home.
This summer’s programme gives even more people the opportunity to experience one of the most vibrant and historic destinations in Greater Manchester.
