Labour MP Alex Ballinger has said that a second referendum would be needed if the government proposes re-joining the EU.
He told the Camilla Tominey Show on GB News: “I think if that hypothetical scenario was to happen, of course we would need another referendum. But I think it’s also fair to say that what people voted for in 2016, what they were promised by the Vote Leave campaign, isn’t what has been delivered.
“When I speak to businesses in Halesowen, when I speak to manufacturers, when I speak to farmers, when I speak to supermarkets, they’re really struggling with the deal that we have at the moment. It’s really hard, and also people voted to get migration down in 2016.
“You saw the huge spike in migration after the Brexit referendum, which was not what people voted for. So we need to be honest about that.”
He added: “It’s not a binary choice. There are lots of steps along that journey that improve our relationship. There are lots of other countries in Europe that are not members of the EU that have a better deal.
“You can think of the Norwegians, the Swiss, Turkey. There are other examples, and there are other options for us.
“I think having that honest conversation about the costs of Brexit, about the alternative options that are on the table is something the people of Halesowen and everywhere else would appreciate.”
On the head of MI5 saying the Russians tried to interfere with the Brexit vote but failed to influence the outcome, Ballinger said: “I think that’s the distinction, and that distinction is really important because the Russians are always trying to interfere in democracies.
“I sit on the Foreign Affairs Committee; they’re interfering in elections all across Europe. They nearly affected the result in Romania and Moldova in recent elections. They absolutely tried to interfere in our election during the Brexit debate. They tried to interfere in that. They put stuff out on their channels. There were the online trolls and the like.
“But the important thing is that British people were smart enough not to be influenced by that interference.”
He added: “It’s important that we know that foreign adversaries, the Russians and others, the Iranians are another example, are trying to interfere in our democracy, trying to manipulate what people think, even if they’re not successful, it’s important that the public know that.”
