Residents invited to help shape Brinnington’s £20 million Pride in Place investment

Following the announcement earlier this year that Brinnington has secured £20 million through the national Pride in Place programme, work is now underway to make sure local residents are at the heart of how this investment is shaped and delivered.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in Brinnington, building on local strengths, supporting community ideas, and making sure decisions are driven by the people who know the area best: its residents.

We are pleased to confirm the appointment of lifelong Brinnington resident Nicola Thompson as Chair of the Pride in Place Board. Nicola will help guide Pride in Place forward, working closely with residents and local partners to ensure it reflects the priorities, strengths and voices of the community.

Commenting on her appointment, Nicola said: “Brinnington is my home, and I care deeply about its future. I’m really proud to be taking on this role and working alongside residents to shape what comes next. This is a real opportunity to make sure local voices lead the way, and I would encourage anyone with ideas, energy, or a passion for the area to apply and get involved. We want the Board to reflect the full strength and diversity of our community.”

Once established, the Board’s first priority will be to listen to residents and understand what matters most in Brinnington. This is a resident-led programme, and we want as many people as possible to have their say. There will be regular opportunities for engagement so residents can help shape priorities and influence decisions.

Nicola’s appointment follows a selection process involving Stockport MP Navendu Mishra, Stockport Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection, Cllr Dan Oliver and Brinnington and Stockport Central ward member Cllr Christine Carrigan, reflecting the programme’s commitment to community-led leadership from the outset.

Navendu Mishra MP, Cllr Dan Oliver and Cllr Christine Carrigan said: “We are delighted to see Nicola appointed as Chair of the Brinnington Pride in Place Board. As someone who has lived in Brinnington her whole life, Nicola understands the community, its strengths, and the opportunities ahead better than anyone.

“This funding is a major opportunity for Brinnington, but the success of Pride in Place will come from local people shaping the programme and driving the ideas that matter most to them. Nicola’s leadership will be an important part of making sure residents are at the heart of those decisions.

“We want this to be something the whole community feels part of, and we would encourage residents from all backgrounds to get involved, share their ideas, and help shape the future of Brinnington together.”

Brinnington is a proud, close-knit community with a strong tradition of local involvement. This programme will build on that foundation, drawing on learning from the UK’s largest town centre regeneration in Stockport, and supporting community-led projects and activities that make a real difference locally.

We are now inviting local residents to apply to become members of the Pride in Place Board. Applications are open now and must be submitted by midday on Friday 26 June. Shortlisting will take place shortly after, with appointments confirmed the following week. The first Board meeting is expected to take place in early July.
