The absolute ultimate test of northern endurance is coming back to the Lakes. Action Medical Research has officially launched the 2027 campaign for Race the Sun Lake District, taking place on Saturday, 4 September 2027.
Based in the thriving outdoor hub of Keswick, this classic “adventure triathlon” sees teams of two or four tackle the elements across a majestic UNESCO World Heritage landscape. To succeed, teams must complete a demanding three-stage course entirely using their own steam before the sun dips below the Cumbrian fells.
The Keswick event remains the ultimate powerhouse of the national series, demanding peak endurance across three iconic stages:
The Bike (34 miles): A winding, undulating road cycle route circumnavigating the base of Skiddaw mountain.
The Hike (10 miles): A steep, rocky mountain footpath trek scaling up Latrigg and onward to the towering 931m summit of Skiddaw itself.
The Paddle (2 miles): A test of synchronized team pacing in open-top canoes or kayaks across the picturesque waters of Derwentwater.
The event is supported in-kind by Garmin and holds a SheRACES accreditation to foster a diverse and inclusive starting line. Local teams will be fundraising to help Action Medical Research hit its 2027 series target of £1.174 million, funding pioneering medical research to combat rare diseases, premature birth, and childhood disabilities.
Teams can sign up for a registration fee of £120 (teams of two) or £240 (teams of four), with a fundraising goal of £500 per person.
