International white-collar expert and private client specialist join Ali Legal as partners

Ali Legal Ltd has appointed an international white-collar crime expert and a specialist in residential property and private client law as partners.

Parvez Memon has more than 20 years’ experience advising national and multinational companies at board level on matters including fraud, bribery, embezzlement, extradition, corruption and money laundering. He also specialises in regulatory defence work, advising multinational companies and high-net-worth individuals on their dealings with professional and government regulators.

Mr Memon has relocated from India to join the City of London firm. Prior to his appointment he was senior partner at the Mumbai firm MZM Legal, where he had worked since 2005.

During his career in India Mr Memon acted in some of the country’s most rigorous prosecutorial and governmental investigations. He is one of only a handful of expert lawyers to have undertaken sensitive trials under India’s and Maharashtra state’s anti-terrorism and organised crime laws.

He said, “The first time I met Akbar it was clear we had a shared vision for both the purpose of the firm and our strategy to grow the practice. I am confident that together we can scale up to greater heights, providing a personal, timely and professional standard of service while making the most of all the advantages that come from being based in the City of London.”

Rebekah Banks, meanwhile, has joined Ali Legal from the York firm Hague & Dixon. As a partner, she will lead both the firm’s private client work and its residential conveyancing practice.

She specialises in a range of matters including estate planning, lasting powers of attorney, wills and the Court of Protection. She also has extensive experience conducting a wide range of residential property transactions.

She said, “I pride myself on building my practice through repeat work and recommendations from clients and fellow professionals. Client service is at the heart of my approach to the law, and I recognised that same guiding principle in Akbar and the firm as a whole, so I wholeheartedly believe that, as a team, we can create something new, exciting and client-centred here in the heart of the capital.”

In addition to the recent appointment of Mr Memon and Miss Banks, Ali Legal welcomed associate solicitor Tariro Nyoka to its employment practice earlier this year. Ms Nyoka, who previously worked for Irwin Mitchell and Leigh Day, joined the firm from Securitas UK, where she held an in-house role.

Akbar Ali, founder and managing director of Ali Legal, said, “For a firm that has been in existence for less than two years to be attracting lawyers of the calibre of Parvez, Rebekah and Tariro demonstrates we have a vision and strategy that top-class professionals buy into.

“Their appointment marks a major waypoint on our journey to becoming a leading boutique firm providing joined-up legal advice to business leaders, their firms and their families. I look forward immensely to working with them over the months and years ahead as we build our business into a force to be reckoned with.”

Ali Legal Ltd was founded in 2020 by the corporate lawyer and entrepreneur Akbar Ali. Based in the City of London, it provides a range of legal services tailored to the needs of business owners and the companies they operate, throughout the UK and internationally
