Interior experts help you fall in love with your home again

Over the past 18 months we have spent so many hours in our homes that you may be feeling a little burnt out and tired with your interior.

Whether you’ve fallen out of love with your living room or your kitchen could do with a little TLC, we’ve spoken to three interior experts to help you reignite your love for the living space.

Speaking from Wiltshire and Willow, a monthly home and interior subscription box, Helena Wiltshire said:

“The past 18 months have left many of us spending many more hours than usual in our homes. Staying in the same environment every day for home and work can make your house feel boring but you would be surprised how just making a few small changes here and there can bring a whole new feel to your home.

“From switching around furniture to adding a pop of colour using small home accessories, such as a vase or a fun new soap dish. One affordable way to bring a new feel into your home is through home décor pieces – at Wiltshire & Willow, we offer monthly subscription boxes featuring a range of stylish pieces of homeware.

“Each month you will receive 4-5 premium home decor products to your door all from small UK brands so it won’t be anything your friends have already! It’s like having your own interior designer in a box. Previous boxes have included items such as hand-thrown ceramics, along with vases, tea towels and glass soap dispensers. There’s lots of scope to try new styles and upgrade your space.”

“Tweaking your home in a multi-sensorial way is a fast and cost-effective way to create a noticeable transformation. As a perfumer, how you experience your home through scent is at the forefront of my nose and thoughts.

“Fragrance has the power to trigger powerful memories and can transport you right back to happier times. In the current climate when not everybody can afford major makeovers, fragrance allows us to fall in love again with our homes and appreciate what we have in life.

“In this context, I would recommend placing our new reed diffusers in strategic locations of the home. Some of the spots I would suggest include in the hallway. This is the first place you will welcome visitors, friends and family to your home. A reed diffuser with a wonderfully fresh and uplifting perfume will set the tone for your transformation.

“Another ideal spot for scents would be in the kitchen – this is where families and friends congregate most of their time, especially in the age of open-plan living. Look for something that is designed for large rooms and a fragrance that inspires ‘al fresco’ dining, e.g. basil, thyme, …

“Of course, the living and dining room are ideal places to keep your reed diffusers or candles. At some point during the day, most families spend quality time in this area, so I would suggest a scent that is comforting but fresh, such as vanilla and musk.

“In the bedroom, clearly here the theme is ‘sleeping peacefully’ and the obvious essential oil to calm you for the night is lavender. Alternative oils, with the same effect, are rose and bergamot. All three of them fit beautifully with a fragrance theme of summer.

“For a luxurious bathing experience, the obvious note is aqua or marine. As an alternative, we suggest watery fragrance notes, such as melon, cucumber or sea salt.”

“Along with ‘you’re on mute’, one of the other commonly used phrases in recent times has been ‘staycations’.

“We have all experienced this first hand as we took lockdown to redecorate both our bedroom and living room!

“My approach is all about bold yet simple statements which bring together any room. If you are on a budget then revive your living room with fresh flowers, candles, a corner table lamp – I like to move around the furniture at least twice a year to change my perspective (and the view).

“When it comes to the bedroom, I like to focus on minimal furniture but draw attention to the bed with crisp sheet with hints of design and add texture with a throw.

“My mantra is simple – revive, reset and refresh.”
