Football legends to do battle on the golf course

Ally McCoist, Alan Smith and Danny Murphy are among the former international footballers lined up for a new golf competition spanning the UK.

Premium sporting events business Watson Metters Golf will kick off the Football Legends Charity Golf Series this summer on August 12 at Foxhills Country Club and Resort, Ottershaw, Surrey.

The London Legends Charity Golf Day and Dinner will be a first of its kind event where footballing icons of the past battle it out on the golf course rather than on the football field.

Club legends and fans will play alongside one another representing the club they love against their fiercest regional rivals.

There are over 50 legends signed up with over 500 international caps and 120 major honours between them, including Smith, Perry Groves, John Hartson, Murphy, McCoist, Dean Ashton, Paul Walsh and Alan Stubbs to name just a few.

Mike Watson, 30, started the business alongside Ben Metters after he formulated the idea of golfing tournaments with close contacts in the footballing world.

Mike said: “I started out in the music industry after finding my way into an international boyband consisting of five boys from five different countries. I was then fortunate enough to be part of the support act for Maroon 5 on their European arena tour and during this time whilst recording in the USA I was fortunate enough to meet a children’s charity, struck up a good relationship and put on a show for them.

“Having seen the good that could be done, I found myself wanting to help as many causes as possible.”

Soon after, Mike organised a golf tournament using the friends he had at Chelsea Football Club, working alongside the legendary Paul Canoville in May 2019 to host an 18-hole contest at the Silvermere Golf Course in Surrey. Chelsea legends such as Pat Nevin and Kerry Dixon joined the event.

“When we realised we could bring in ex-players from the eight biggest clubs in London, it all snowballed from there, and now we have five regional events lined up.”

The August 12 event will feature club legends from the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and more.
