Grey Still Dominates
Grey remains the UK’s favourite car colour, accounting for 27.8% of all new car registrations in 2024. That means over half a million grey cars hit British roads last year. The neutral, versatile shade hides dirt well and doesn’t show minor scratches as much as darker colours, making it a popular choice. It’s also a colour commonly associated with premium and executive models, making it a safe choice for company cars and fleet buyers.
Blue’s Comeback
After years of neutral colours dominating the market, blue has surged to third place, overtaking white. In 2024, 14.9% of all new cars sold in the UK were blue. This marks the first time since 2010 that blue has been in the top three. Car manufacturers now offer more shades of blue and EVs are sold in standout colours, with blue symbolising eco-friendliness, contributing to the rise in blue.
Green is THE trending car colour with a 28% annual increase
Whilst it is still a niche choice, green car registrations increased by 27.7% in 2024, the highest number since 2004. Green cars tend to be associated with eco-conscious buyers, and many new electric and hybrid models are available in green shades. In Greater London, more green cars were sold than elsewhere in the UK, likely reflecting the capital’s focus on cleaner transport.
Psychologist reveals what your car colour says about you
Nationwide Vehicle Contracts has spoken exclusively with Niloufar Esmaeilpour, a registered clinical counsellor, who has revealed what your chosen car colour says about your personality and psychological behaviours.
Car colour choice reflects how people view themselves and wish to be viewed by others: “Most car colours result from several psychic drives such as personal taste, emotional attachments, and subliminal imperatives. It can also be due to social factors like trends or the need to fit in.”
What your car colour says about you: “Drivers who choose bold, bright colours, like red or yellow-can be viewed as outgoing, energetic, or confident. Those more interested in neutral tones of black, white, or grey value sophistication, practicality, or understatement. A person who is optimistic or excited might be drawn to bright colours such as orange or yellow. Whereas a person who is introspective or shy may prefer darker colours, black or navy.”
Avoid these car colours on the road: “Certain colours suggest a person’s tendency toward risk or caution. For example, bold colours, such as red or bright yellow, are believed to be for the risk-taker, so are car colours to be wary of on the roads. Subdued colours, such as beige, grey, or white, are more likely to be cautious, so they are likely to drive carefully on the roads. These associations can help understand an individual’s personality and how they interact with the world around them.”
