Dog treats that plant trees – British brand goes plastic-free
As Plastic Free July begins, one British brand is going the extra mile to do its part in the fight against plastic waste.
Denzel’s is on a mission to become the leader in sustainable and healthy snacks for dogs.
Carbon emissions and single-use plastic are two huge issues causing damage to the environment. Single-use plastic is widely used in the pet category, especially in dog treats, as it is easy to produce, cheap and durable.
Only 9% of plastic has ever been recycled and even recyclable plastic still ends up in landfills and oceans, adding to the 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic waste that has been produced since the 1950s. Denzel’s is on a mission to find a real-world solution to help solve these issues.
All of Denzel’s packaging is now 100% plastic-free and made from three layers: biomasses, cellulose and paper (all from trees grown in sustainable forests). Its healthy dog snacks come in home compostable packaging that will naturally biodegrade in a landfill in around 30 weeks, not 300 years like single-use plastic packs. It also upcycles ingredients, uses no palm oil and bakes all low-calorie snacks in eco-friendly, carbon-neutral ovens here in the UK.
But the company don’t want to stop there! As it now only use materials from trees, London-based Denzel’s has announced it is working with the non-profit organisation Ecologi to sustainably plant trees and replace the materials used for packaging.
To celebrate Plastic Free month, Denzel’s will plant a tree for every order on its website as well as every pack from selected retailers including Sainsbury’s, Ocado and BP.
Nathan Perry, co-founder and managing director, said: “It’s really important to us to be a sustainable eco-friendly brand and going completely plastic-free with our packaging is something we really wanted to do. We want this to set a standard for other pet brands to hopefully follow. ”
Daisy Neale, brand manager at Denzel’s, added: “We strive to be ‘packaging negative’ by replacing the materials we use to create our eco-friendly packaging. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Ecologi to support reforestation projects around the world to help offset our impact.”
Denzel’s customers can head to www.ecologi.com/denzels to see the trees that have been planted on their behalf during plastic-free month. They can even watch them grow in real-time!
Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution and Denzel’s is being part of the push to remove plastics from supply chains
