In a bid to highlight the phenomenal work of female artists for the masses, independent curator, Gita Joshi, has partnered with the team behind South London Women Artists (SLWArtists) to host a virtual exhibition. The online showcase, titled She answered, “Art”, launches 14 April and will include over 40 pieces created by the critically acclaimed group of visual artists.

Gita Joshi, the founder of The Curator’s Salon, has hand-selected works by SLWArtists for inclusion, comprising a range of styles including printmaking, photography, painting and textiles. Going ‘live’ on Wednesday, the online exhibition will be available to view for free throughout spring, until 23 May.

Gita commented:

“I am so pleased to be working with the team at South London Women Artists to curate and exhibit this wonderful collection for all to enjoy. The past year has had a huge effect for everyone in the creative industry, with Covid restrictions seeing many shows across the UK postponed or cancelled, so to provide a solution to this has been hugely rewarding.

“We’ve seen time and again women visual artists be overlooked by the larger commercial galleries, so creating spaces specifically for female expression to flourish is something I’m tremendously passionate about. It has been fantastic to work with the SLWArtists to do this. I know I speak on behalf of us all when I say that we hope that by making the online exhibition free, we can make it accessible to as many people as possible and encourage more people to engage with the work of female visual artists.”

SLWArtists was launched in 2008 and is a not-for-profit association managed and run by its members. The collective often creates exhibitions and events throughout the year, empowering women from a range of professions within the art world to share their expertise.

The She answered, “Art” exhibition was created with the core belief that art is often the answer to everything in mind, and each artist within SLWArtists submitted pieces that expressed their ‘art answer’. The pieces together form a collective articulation of diverse voices, showing how differently female visual artists honour their creative calling through art making.

“The work created by these amazing artists has truly been inspiring, and I hope that the online visitors enjoy the pieces that I’ve chosen to include. It’s important that though artists are unable to collaborate in person right now, we are still supporting and encouraging one another to continue creating. The community generated by SLWArtists is fantastic at supporting women in the arts, and I’m delighted to be able to bring this online exhibition to life with them,” Gita concluded.
