Drivers are being urged to think twice before carrying large amounts of fireworks in their vehicles ahead of Diwali and Bonfire Night.
Automotive experts at LeaseLoco.com are reminding drivers about the fines and legal risks associated with transporting fireworks.
Fireworks are the perfect addition to Diwali celebrations, but there are strict limits on how many can be carried in a vehicle, with safety regulations in place to prevent accidents.
Under the Explosives Regulations Act 2014, transporting more than 50kg* of fireworks without a valid transport licence may be an offence. Breaching these rules could also affect car insurance if the vehicle is involved in an accident.
It is also illegal for anyone under 18 to buy or use fireworks, and younger drivers should never transport them for friends or family.
Fireworks aren’t like ordinary goods – they are regulated explosives that could cause serious accidents if involved in a collision. So drivers should ensure they are stored in a spark-proof container to reduce the risk of ignition and injury.
In addition, misuse of fireworks, including carrying an unsafe or excessive load, can result in an on-the-spot fine of £90.**
John Wilmot, CEO and founder of car leasing deals site LeaseLoco said: “During mid October, as we edge closer to Diwali and Bonfire Night, many families will be buying fireworks for private displays at home. But drivers should think carefully about how much they’re carrying to avoid potential problems on the road.
“Fireworks are often bought in bulk without much thought to quantity or transport, but they are still classed as explosives. Carrying more than 50kg can result in fines, invalidate insurance, or even create a serious safety risk in the event of an accident.
“It’s also important to remember that only those aged 18 or over can legally buy or use fireworks. This means that 17-year-old drivers transporting fireworks could face fines for illegal possession.
“Before travelling with fireworks, take a moment to consider the right precautions. Doing so helps ensure everyone can enjoy the celebrations while staying safe.”
