Worthington Primary School creates dialogue between parents, teachers and children on the impacts of serious injury

‘Bracky Builds A New Den’, a story launched by Fletchers Solicitors, aims to break down barriers and remove stigma that can sometimes be associated with serious injury and illness.

The book covers the story of a happy dinosaur whose life is turned upside down when their father suffers a serious injury. Developed alongside child psychotherapists and first-hand accounts from families and children who have experienced serious injury, the book acts as a sensitive and empathetic guide for children aged five to eight, who might be experiencing the same challenges as faced by Bracky.

The book is currently being distributed to schools across the country in a bid to allow young people to access a resource that might help them process their emotions during difficult periods, and Worthington Primary School is one of the latest to be in receipt of the book.

Highlighting the importance of practical solutions in navigating grief

Clive Searle, Head Teacher at the school, commented:

“It’s remarkable how the children have built a connection between the story and what they’re doing in school in terms of personal, social and emotional development.”

“The strategies used in the book are very good because they open a direct way of working with children who have problems. Teachers need to read this book; it highlights the importance of having practical solutions. The practical elements in the book; the torch, jar of questions and colouring pencils, really resonate with me; exactly how to overcome periods of intense grief and difficult times with some children. For Bracky, these elements de-internalise his thoughts so that they can be dealt with.”

Bracky Builds a New Den is a children’s book developed by serious personal injury law firm, Fletchers Solicitors. It is the tale of a happy dinosaur whose life is turned upside down when a family member suffers a serious injury.

Aimed at children living in similar circumstances, the book has been developed following a period of research using tailored, professional advice from therapists and first-hand accounts from families and children who have experienced serious injury. Fletchers has also collated a series of supporting resources which are designed to encourage readers of the book to explore their own feelings and emotions together following the event of a parent of carer’s serious injury.
