World Television Day: What is your TV streamer personality type?

The past couple of years have been turbulent for many, especially with lockdown restrictions having been in place, so it may not come as much surprise that Britons spent a third of their time watching TV and online videos in 2020, according to Ofcom. On average, that makes up a daily amount of five hours and 40 minutes – longer than the average time spent to run a full marathon!

Interestingly, UK streaming service subscriptions rose to 31 million last year, an increase of 20 million from the previous year. Viewers also spent almost twice as much time watching streaming services (one hour and five minutes per day), on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

There are various types of streamer personalities, and not only those who stream at home. Netflix surveyed adults worldwide in 2017 and found that 67% of people watch movies and series in public. TV retailer The Very Group analysed the different types and looked at certain traits each streamer may possess.

The Very Group also sourced top tips from Northwest Medicine on how to ensure you’re streaming safely, so that you can relax with your favourite shows whilst safe in the knowledge you’re looking after yourself.

The commute-binger

You might be the type of commuter who prefers to pick up a tablet and stream your favourite series, especially when it comes to those longer journeys home after work.

So, to relax and block out any surrounding sound, the commute-binger will spend their train or bus journeys streaming their favourite show. Series are a better option for commute streamers as they can just pick up where they left off before.

The Sunday-streamer

For some, Sunday’s are solely made for streaming. The Sunday streamer will binge shows for hours on end!

The Sunday streamer will most likely spend the day in their PJ’s attached to the sofa, ready for their movie marathon.

The most popular series and films streamed on Netflix within the first 28 days of release are Bridgerton, Lupin, Stranger Things, The Queen’s Gambit, The Witcher and Money Heist. So if you’re a Sunday streamer and haven’t already binged any of these, then here’s some options to keep you going.

The everyday-engager

No matter where they are, the everyday-watchers will find time throughout their working day to stream a show.

Whether it’s during their lunch break when working from home, or making the most of flexible working and having a series playing in the background, the everyday-watchers can’t go a day without streaming.

The gym-binger

For some gym-goers, the only way to stay motivated is to watch your favourite show. Love Island cardio, anyone?! Most gyms in the UK will already have streaming subscriptions on their equipment, so running on a treadmill suddenly seems like a breeze!

David Lloyd gyms even released their new program ‘PTV’ where personal trainers have screens attached to their backs, so you can binge-watch guilt free during a workout.

5. The washing-watcher

Hate housework? Who doesn’t! For some, there’s nothing to make washing, cleaning and tidying go faster like watching an episode of a hit show to pass the time. The type of show depends on the viewer- some like familiar background shows of 20-30 minute episodes, whereas some like to have their attention captured by the latest blockbuster hit to distract them. Whether it’s a Friends marathon, Selling Sunset Season 4 or the latest true crime documentary, streaming a show during mundane household tasks makes the time fly.
