What to expect when People’s History Museum reopens on Wednesday 19 May 2021
When People’s History Museum (PHM) reopens to welcome visitors on Wednesday 19
May 2021 a series of new exhibitions will also open for the first time, each exploring the
museum’s 2021 headline theme of migration. Open Kitchen Cafe & Bar will also be
celebrating its launch, leading the food revolution with a concept that takes a sustainable
and ethical approach.
May 2021 will see the beginning of a bold, challenging and inspiring programme; the story
and legacy of Jo Cox will be explored for the first time in a special exhibition More in
Common: in memory of Jo Cox featuring the Jo Cox Memorial Wall, a series of
exhibitions programmed by the Community Programme Team will commence and the
hostile environment faced by many migrants will be reflected in the exhibition #WELCOME?
These new exhibitions will be followed by a British Museum Spotlight Loan Crossings:
community and refuge, when the Lampedusa cross and installation Dark Water, Burning
World arrive at PHM on Saturday 29 May 2021 for what will be the beginning of their first
tour across the UK.
Katy Ashton, Director of People’s History Museum, says, “We are really looking forward
to welcoming visitors back to the museum and are delighted to be doing so with so much
new content to explore and even a brand new cafe and bar experience to enjoy. The
collection of stories, accounts and memories we’ll be sharing in our exhibitions will be
expressed in lots of different ways, with the individuals and communities that they represent
at the heart of their telling. These are all powerfully moving, inspiring and thought
provoking, and highlight the impact of migration upon life experiences.”
When People’s History Museum reopens on Wednesday 19 May 2021 it will be with new
opening hours; Wednesday to Sunday, from 10.00am to 4.00pm. The entire 2021
programme is Family Friendly, with special elements developed alongside the exhibitions
designed with younger visitors in mind. The museum and its exhibitions are free to visit with
a suggested donation of £5.
