The Pankhurst Centre celebrates Heritage Open Days

Manchester’s Pankhurst Centre is getting creative for this year Heritage Open Days, with inspirational poetry workshops and a trail that will take young visitors on a rhyming journey through the museum. Poetry at the Pank takes place on Friday 8 September and Friday 15 September and the Creativity Unwrapped Museum Trail takes place on Sunday 10 September, Thursday 14 September and Sunday 17 September. All activities are free and bookable in advance.

Poetry at the Pank is the ultimate suffragette experience, which starts with a private tour of the museum taking you to the heart of the story of the Pankhurst family and their role in the votes for women campaign. This is followed by a writing workshop, Suffrage Sonnets, which has been designed for everyone from beginners to more experienced writers. The sessions are inspired by the work of female poets, including Sylvia Pankhurst, and this year’s festival theme, which is Creativity Unwrapped. Sylvia’s poetry was an important part of her activism and alongside her painting was how she creatively shared what she observed working class women to be going through.

Poetry at the Pank is a free, but places are limited and must be booked in advance. The sessions are designed for over 18s and take place from 11am to 1pm. Places can be booked.

On Sunday 10 September, Thursday 14 September and Sunday 17 September a self-guided trail will be an exciting Family Friendly way to explore the Pankhurst Centre museum. The Creativity Unwrapped Museum Trail will prompt curiosity and require the eagle eyed discovery of some of the fascinating objects and stories to be found at the Pankhurst Centre. The backdrop is the home of the Pankhurst family, where the suffragette movement was founded in 1903. This is followed by the opportunity to make a suffragette keyring to take home as a souvenir.

Creativity Unwrapped Museum Trail is a free Family Friendly activity that can be booked in advance.

Entry to the Pankhurst Centre is free, with visitors asked to consider making a donation of £5 to support the work to keep this heritage building open to visitors and schools. The garden, café and pop up shop are all part of the experience. The Pankhurst Centre’s regular opening hours are every Thursday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm, for further information visit pankhurstmuseum.com
