Study unveils Greater Manchester residents in most need of a sunny holiday!
The north-south divide is debated in a number of areas across politics and the economy, but it appears Mother Nature also has her prejudices as Greater Manchester has been unveiled as the place that is in most need of a sunny holiday.
Get More Vits, the leading vitamin water brand, has analysed historic Met Office data over the last 30 years, with the North West location consistently being in the top 10 for the places suffering across a number of categories that can hamper the amount of vitamin D residents are receiving.
Taking into consideration factors such as sunlight hours, volume of rain, days of rainfall and maximum temperature it makes unpleasant reading for Greater Manchester. The region endures 47% of days in the rain, with a total of 1,197 millimetres falling, the sixth most of anywhere in the country.
Glasgow followed closely in second as the place where residents most need a sunny holiday, with Blackburn, Lancashire, completing the top three.
Much of the top 10 was made up of the north of the UK, split between Scotland, Northern Ireland and West Yorkshire, while at the other end of the table, it’s good news for residents of Southend-on-Sea, with the town having the most optimum conditions for getting their fix of vitamin D than anywhere in the UK.
When it comes to the amount of sunlight each area of the UK receives, Southend featured sixth in the sunniest locations to live, enjoying 1,884 hours of sunshine across a year, equating to around 42% of daylight hours having the sunshine beaming down.
However, for people of Inverness, they’re sunshine intake stands at just 28% of daylight hours, with just 1,250 hours across the year.
Becky Graham, nutritionist at Get More Vits said, “No matter where you live, if you’re in the UK, due to our location in the Northern hemisphere, we simply do not have access to the sunlight we need to ensure levels remain topped up year-round, and because it’s impossible to get enough through our diet, (unless you want to eat 10 eggs per day), then supplementing is a sensible idea for all of us”.
