Soft Toys Provide Life-Long Empathy For Animals

Everyone remembers their favourite soft toy from growing up. Whether it was a monkey, a dog, or simply a traditional teddy, one thing is for certain, it was always by our side.

Eco-friendly toy brand Living Nature believe that there is a strong link between children owning an animal plush toy and their empathy towards real-life animals in later life, a notion which is supported by environmental psychologist and wellbeing expert, Lee Chambers.

Soft toys often come in animal form, and children can become very connected to their cuddly toys. This early attachment is thought to foster feelings of compassion which we carry right through to adulthood, providing us with a life-long empathy for animals.

Chambers reveals, “Stuffed animals can bring a greater sense of security when moving through life stages or challenging events. The external circumstances change but the toy/pets remains the same, producing a secure anchor to transition from.

“We know from a variety of studies that petting animals can reduce cortisol in humans, lower blood pressure and heart rate, ultimately relieving stress and promoting calmness.

“Touching a stuffed toy, especially when faced with a significant fear, can provide similar soothing benefits according to research; creating more comfort and calmness, especially in those with lower self-esteem.

“Furthermore, stuffed animals have been known to help with securing attachments and even rebuilding impaired attachment bonds. These bonds play a significant role in mental wellbeing, reported happiness and quality of life.

“The majority of studies agree that children are more likely to be compassionate and empathetic if they have healthy attachments and a clearer sense of self and non-self.

“Stuffed animals impact attachment, helping children with understanding and being sensitive to the moods and needs of others, which in itself can improve empathy towards animals”, reveals Chambers.
