Size doesn’t matter, but only when it comes to the UK’s favourite chip
In new research released today, plant based frozen food brand, Strong Roots, found that Brits prefer a chip two inches long, with crispy edges and perfectly golden in colour.
To celebrate the launch of their new Crispy Skinny Fries, Strong Roots dived into the psyche of Britain to find out their potato preferences, with research unveiling that we like our chips to be fluffy on the inside but with a nice crunch. And while the chunky chip is still a firm favourite, the skinny fry is hot on its heels with almost a quarter (22 per cent) of Brits preferring the latter, opposed to the wedge which received just 5 per cent of the vote.
A brand-new offering for Strong Roots, the Crispy Skinny Fries are a new addition to the B Corp brand’s already wide-ranging chip family, and have been developed with the same all natural ingredients Strong Roots are famous for. Listening to the needs of the nation, the Crispy Skinny Fries offer a unique crispiness that consumers clearly love, whilst retaining those essential, perfectly fluffy insides.
The study of 2,000 adults also voted the Maris Piper, key ingredient in Strong Roots’ Crispy Skinny Fries, the best spud for the job. The research also finally put the great condiment debate to rest; with the nation speaking out and firmly crowning ketchup as the king of condiments. A whopping 53 per cent voted in favour of the tomato sauce over its fierce rival mayo, which received just 31 per cent of the vote.
It also became clear that we’re a nation of dipping daredevils, with the research revealing some of the WEIRDEST condiments people pair with their fries. Leading the charge is the mighty milkshake, with almost a quarter (23 per cent) admitting to dunking their favourite fry. A sweet tooth appears to be a trend, with 17 per cent liking ICE CREAM with their fries, and 15 per cent even opting for MANGO CHUTNEY. The weird and wonderful continues with more than 1 in 10 admitting to eating their chips with chocolate sauce, whilst 8 per cent opt for peanut butter and soy sauce respectively.
However, when it comes to toppings we like to stick to tradition, with curry sauce (30 per cent), grated cheese (29 per cent) and gravy (26 per cent) topping the charts.
Despite Brits only scoring themselves a four out of 10 when it comes from making them from scratch, the average adult eats chips twice a week, with a quarter preferring them cooked from frozen. However, as our health becomes increasingly important to us, almost half (46 per cent) are now opting to eat chips that are made with healthy or natural ingredients. As the only fries on the market to have all-natural ingredients and three Green Traffic Lights on front of pack, Strong Roots Crispy Skinny Fries are looking to change the future of fries.
It also emerged Friday is the most popular night for eating chips, however 27 per cent admitted they would happily eat them every day of the week.
When it comes to our favourite fry-based meals, we’re staying true to our (strong) roots, with the iconic fish and chips taking the crown with 57 per cent of the vote, followed by burger and chips (38 per cent) and steak and chips (27 per cent). But meat free options also had a say, with 14 per cent voting for veggie burger and chips and 12 per cent preferring vegan fish and chips as a plant-based preference to the nation’s favourite.
Chief Chip Operator of Strong Roots, Pat Tato, said: “”The nation has spoken and the perfect chip has been revealed. You can’t deny everyone loves a fry but clearly people are very particular about what type of chip they have. It’s always a topic that’s up for discussion and a lot of the time can cause friendly friction. From colour to crunch, our brand new Crispy Skinny Fries are the perfect snack to truly satis-fry the nation’s needs. And while ketchup won out as the ultimate condiment, we’re thrilled to see people’s saucy sides coming through; whether you like to keep it clean or slather your fries in chocolate sauce, at Strong Roots we embrace it all – whatever you’re into, we have a wide range of chips that will tickle your fancy”
Crispy Skinny Fries add to the brand’s already mega offering in Chips, including Proper Chips, Sweet Potato Fries, and Mixed Root Veg Fries and are available to buy from Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Ocado, Morrisson’s and Asda, at an RRP of £2.9
