Satinder Grewal, Aspray Loss Assessor, Offers Insight on ITV News Segment Addressing Subsidence and Climate Change’s Impact on Properties

Aspray Loss Assessor, Satinder Grewal, recently participated in a compelling ITV News segment that sheds light on the concerning effects of climate change on properties, with a particular focus on subsidence. The segment, hosted by reporter Geraint Vincent, aired at 7pm on Friday 28th July on ITV. The segment showcased Satinder’s expertise as he guided Geraint Vincent around a property in East London that is currently experiencing subsidence. The property is currently subject to an ongoing insurance claim due to the damage caused by the shifting foundations, which Satinder is managing on behalf of the property owner. His extensive knowledge and experience as a loss assessor allowed him to provide valuable insights into the devastating effects of subsidence and its potential link to climate change.

During the tour, Satinder explained to Geraint Vincent how subsidence occurs and the alarming ways in which climate change may exacerbate this issue. As the temperature rises, prolonged dry periods and extreme weather events can lead to soil moisture imbalances, causing the ground to shrink and settle. This, in turn, can result in significant structural damage to properties, as observed in the property they visited.

A tree in the grounds of the property is said to be the main cause of the subsidence in the property shown by Satinder. He said during the ITV segment: “The original problem here that we faced was a tree in the back garden, which had tree roots going towards the property, and they were drawing moisture to survive, but that moisture is being drawn from beneath the property itself, most likely due to less moisture available at surface level in the garden.”

Aspray’s invaluable contribution in assisting property owners during times of crisis has earned them a reputation as one of the leading loss assessing companies in the industry. Satinder Grewal, with his expertise and dedication, has become an essential asset in helping clients navigate the complexities of insurance claims related to subsidence and other property damages.

Additionally, Aspray provided images of other subsidence claims they have successfully managed in recent years. These photos depict the extent of the damage caused by subsidence.

Laura Huges from the Association of British Insurers also took part in the segment. She said: “In 2022 we’ve seen insurers expected to pay out £290million in claims and we know that nearly 80% of those came after the summer extreme temperatures that we saw. That’s 18,000 claims after the summer and that’s one claim every 15 minutes for the second half of the year.”
