Online healthy food retailer musclefood has launched protein bars made from crickets

Protein bars made from CRICKETS are set to be the latest must-have healthy snack for Brits this summer.

Online healthy food retailer musclefood have expanded their offering of high-protein snack products to include Chocolate Cricket Protein Bars.

Each HOP bar contains ten crickets, which have been ground down to create cricket flour, a massive 10g of protein and just 111 calories.

Crickets and other insects are common snacks for those living in Asia and other parts of the world, but the nutrient-packed produce is often shied away from in Britain.

Around 65% of cricket flour is protein making it a good choice for people following a healthy lifestyle.

The health benefits don’t stop there. Crickets boast over double the amount of iron than found in spinach and are extremely calcium rich.

Currently on sale for £1.60 a bar, or £16 for 12, they contain all nine essential amino acids, making them a great all-round product for any health-conscious customer.

Insects are set to be the next big thing, with them requiring less water, feed and space to be farmed in comparison to more popular meat and protein options.

Head of New Product Development from musclefood, Beth Colquitt said: “We’re always on the lookout for innovative new products and ideas which will appeal to our customers who are following a healthy lifestyle.

“As Brits become more aware of the sustainability of the food we eat and consider environmental factors before purchasing food, bugs are likely to become more and more popular.

“We first introduced bug-based products some years ago and they’ve also been a popular addition to the site. As well as being full of protein, customers appreciate the environmental credentials too with each bar saving a massive 22 litres of water.”

Beth continued: “Insects such as crickets are seen as a delicacy across the world, and with all the added health benefits we think it won’t be long before they’re really take off in the UK and become as popular as they are elsewhere.

“We love bringing our customers products ahead of the game and I know they’ll enjoy these. I’ve tried them and they taste like a crunchy milky way – what’s not to love!”
