New virus killing technology set to revolutionise cruise safety

The cruise industry has been relying on deep cleaning, fogging and movement restrictions to combat viral outbreaks. This is far from ideal, being time consuming, costly, and less than optimal for passenger wellbeing.

However, new UV active sanitisation technology promises to revolutionise the way cruise ships combat contagions. Far-UV irradiation is harmless to humans, but kills superbugs, Norovirus, Coronaviruses, Flu, and a wide range of other dangerous contaminants.

Once installed It does this quietly, with no manual intervention, no consumables, no chemicals, and no harmful effects on humans. It can be used all the time in occupied public spaces, actively cleaning the air and surfaces during use. Far-UV eliminates 99.9% of contaminants in minutes (seconds where close quarters wand technology is used).

An infected person can potentially contaminate many people as they move through an environment. With active Far-UV deployed it is cleaning the air they breathe out and the surfaces they touch. A few minutes after they have passed through an area is sanitised. Even when they are stationary the Far UV system is actively combating and supressing any contagions, dramatically reducing the viral load in their immediate area.

The technology is extremely cost effective; once installed it has a long cycle of controlled operation and rarely needs any manual intervention until bulbs need changing. The systems come with control software and reporting so you know how all the lamps are operating and can also change their cycle of operation.

“This really is a game changer” said Phillip Emsley, UEC managing director “This is a new but extremely powerful tool to help control the spread of viruses. It combats Flu and Noroviruses as well as Coronaviruses, so installing Far-UV active protection can have a wide range of long-term benefits for crew and passenger safety. It is the ultimate reassurance that a ship is being actively decontaminated all the time.”

Far-UV active protection is available in a range of deployable devices including low profile integrated lights, stand-alone lamps, sterilisation gates and high-power sterilisation wands.
