Did you know that…:

  • 35 metres below the surface at Holborn is an abandoned platform that is now used to trial new platform furniture?
  • A disused station at Aldwych is where the Elgin Marbles were hidden during the war?
  • We meet the man who drove the last Aldwych train?

These secrets and more are revealed in a new show coming to Yesterday channel on Monday 19th July:

Secrets of the London Underground

Starts Monday 19th July, 8pm on Yesterday (Catch-up on UKTV Play)

In Secrets of the London Underground, railway historian Tim Dunn (The Architecture The Railways Built) teams up with Siddy Holloway from the London Transport Museum to explore the disused parts of London’s tube network, from abandoned stations to redundant tunnels and lifts, often hidden right under passengers’ noses.

Privileged access allows Tim and Siddy to learn how the modern Underground network functions, as well as the stories behind the phenomenal engineering and construction feats that created the world’s oldest and best-known subway system.

Tim and Siddy discover how so much of the Underground’s history is intertwined with the social fabric of London, as well as its wartime horrors.
