Natalie says, “There was a flow to the process of making this record that I’d only really felt on my first album, where there was a little bit of magic and a little bit of grace behind it. It’s a beautiful thing to be at this age where nothing is projected onto me, and I can take a chance on myself. I get to be the master of my own destiny.”
The album closes in stunning style with the new focus track “Beautiful Love”. It’s a glimmering anthem and a gorgeous finale in which Natalie soars skyward, singing with hard-won clarity and release. With a raw vulnerability, she lays bare her emotions, accepts her flaws and celebrates her ability to overcome, and invites you to do the same – making for a fitting, dancefloor-friendly tribute to the power of self-love. She adds, “I had the most incredible experience with those guys. They listened and were able to channel everything I wanted to say. When you’ve felt ashamed, you can be carried away by the momentum of it. But once you find your way out, it’s the most freeing feeling in the world.”
The other singles that preceded the album (“Upside Down”, “Algorithm” and “Just Drive”) have made a big impact, an apt reward for taking control of the project both creatively and financially. Together they propelled the album to reach #2 on the iTunes Pre-order Chart, while further campaign highlights have included a Radio 2 playlist and premiere, in-depth podcast conversations on ‘Sounds of The 90s’ (with Fearne Cotton) and ‘Begin Again’ (with Davina McCall), and an international array of shows.
The other new material is equally as bold, emotionally charged and sonically alive. It feels both current and utterly distinctive — a powerful declaration from an artist fully in command of her voice. Fresh highlights demand attention throughout, starting with the multilayered vocals and sleek synth-pop of opener “Debbie” and then weaving a self-aware anthem examining destructive tendencies into the handclap-heavy, disco-pop of “Catastrophe”. The soft, cascading piano and heartrending chorus of “Who Dimmed The Lights” is the album’s most moving moment, dedicated to powerful women who have had to fight to reclaim their identity. And the dizzying ‘Endgame’ is a potent reminder to balance chasing perfection with the need to be present.
