Music executive Korda Marshall awarded Honorary Doctor of Music by UWL

The University of West London (UWL) has awarded Korda Mashall a Honorary Doctor of Music for his contribution to the music industry.

With four decades in the music business, Korda Marshall has signed some of the biggest names in rock and pop. He has played in a band, scouted, signed artists, directed major label A&R departments, produced, executive produced and been a managing director of three major record labels.

After starting his illustrious career at RCA in 1993, Korda has since worked at Atlantic Records, Warner Music Group, BMG, and Mushroom Records and launched record labels Infectious and Contagious.

He was involved with or signed artists such as Muse, The Eurythmics, The Blow Monkeys, The Darkness, James Blunt, Madonna, Green Day, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Gnarls Barkley, The Foals, The Enemy, Pendulum, Seasick Steve, Kylie Minogue, Blondie, Ash, Culture Club, Emma Bunton, and Morrissey, amongst others.

In a full-circle moment in 2022, Korda returned to the Mushroom Group as International Director of the Mushroom Label division’s global operations. He played an instrumental role in striking a multi-layered global partnership between Virgin Music Label & Artist Services to support and distribute Mushroom artists’ releases worldwide, outside of Australia and New Zealand.

Korda currently sits on the board of the Official Charts Company (OCC) and is the non-executive chair of Papa Productions, which produces two successful shows called “Raiding the Rock Vault” and “Raiding the Emo Vault” at The Tropicana in Las Vegas.

“Today, we honour Korda not just for his professional achievements, but also his enduring impact on the music industry and the passion that comes with it,” said Ben Bushell, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Music Management at the London College of Music to the graduands.

“He has shown a keen interest in supporting the next generation of music professionals by visiting our students on several occasions and is particularly fascinated by our university’s own record label: London Noise Records.”

“I get a lot from coming to UWL and meeting the students, taking part in masterclasses and explaining how the real world of the business works and how to engage and create success in this extremely competitive industry,” shared Korda at the ceremony.

To those graduating he said: “I would like to wholeheartedly encourage and support and welcome you all into working in the creative arts. It is important that you are ambitious and dream big and follow through on your creative ideas no matter how silly or stupid or unrealistic others may think them. I hope and pray that all your hopes, aspirations and dreams come true.”
