Putting the enveloping words of Jennifer Clement to an original score composed and vocalised by Colin MacIntyre, the track is featured on Mull’s acclaimed new album ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ – out now on Xtra Mile Recordings.

Interweaving elegant piano lines with spirited string sections, operatic vocal harmonies with uplifting choral hooks, “Not Enough Sorry” is a moving addition to the Mull songbook and one destined to linger in your subconscious for some time.

For his latest musical venture, Colin invited an array of famous authors to contribute lyrics about a room that held a special place in their memory. And on “Not Enough Sorry”, the American/Mexican author and Cannes-winning screenwriter behind cult classic ‘Widow Basquiat’ – and its follow-up ’The Promised Party’ (out Jan ’24) – Jennifer Clement – describes the room that first developed her secret affinity with Scotland and Scottish culture. As Clement explains:

“When Colin MacIntyre invited to me to be a part of In My Mind There’s A Room, he said he would be creating an original celebration of music and literature. I was honoured to be a part of a group of exceptional writers he’d brought together for this project. He had no way of knowing that Scotland is a part of me. Growing up in Mexico City, most Thursday evenings for years beginning at about the age of eleven, I was taken to group classes where I learned Highland dancing. My song lyric began with the title “Not Enough Sorry” as the main idea and refrain. I gave Colin a choice between the song and my poem “Beauty” and he ended up using a mix of the two. With the album now completed, I’ve loved hearing the lyrics and range of melodies, which have created a voyage of wit, darkness, joy and surprise. I owe Colin a tequila!”

“Not Enough Sorry” follows previous collaborative singles including “Panicked Feathers” (with Nick Hornby), “1952” (with Scottish poet laureate Liz Lochhead), and “Room of Masks” (with crime writing supremo Val McDermid); all of which can be found on Mull’s new album ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ (out now).

The first new album from Colin MacIntyre since 2018’s ‘Wakelines’, it was greeted with warm reviews across the board, with The Daily Express praising “long standing fans will be delighted to hear the Society in full flow after a five year silence” (4*), whereas The Scotsman hailed it as “an evocative exploration of place, incorporating the words of some of Scotland’s leading authors” (4*).

Enlisting thirteen highly acclaimed guest authors in all for the project, ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ features lyrics from Ian Rankin, Jacqueline Wilson, the Booker-winning Sebastian Barry, Alan Warner, 2021 US National Book Award-winner Jason Mott, two Scottish poet laureates in Jackie Kay and Liz Lochhead, booker-shortlisted Stephen Kelman (‘Pigeon English’), Val McDermid, Nick Hornby and of course Jennifer Clement (‘Widow Basquiat’). The album’s official artwork also came courtesy of John MacLean of The Beta Band.

Having appeared at an array of arts festivals in support of the record over the Summer, Mull Historical Society is now planning his first full band performances of ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ at two unique shows in London and Manchester in 2024. Inviting an array of Special Guest Authors to join him on stage at the events, Colin and co. will be performing his latest work, PLUS, his widely-revered, gold-selling debut album, ‘Loss’, in their completion. The shows billed as ‘Bookends: ‘Loss’ & ‘In My Mind There’s A Room’ albums in full’ on sale now. Details are as follows:
