Manchester is a focus for local anti-monarchy activism.

Manchester is going to see a rise in anti-monarchy campaigning in response to a nationwide surge in support for pro-democracy group Republic.

Activists will be planning events, stalls and protests across the local area over the coming months and through 2024.

Speaking for Republic, Graham Smith said:

“Starting from today, local activists up and down the country will be ramping up the campaign against the monarchy.”

“Manchester is a hotbed of republicanism, that’s why it’s at the heart of a new activist programme being launched today.”

“The growth in grassroots anti-monarchy activism comes on the back of the coronation arrests in London and a major protest in Edinburgh earlier this month, while support for the monarchy has fallen nearly 20 points over recent years.”

“Local residents from Manchester have decided to take a stand and organise with Republic with the aim of a better future. A future where Charles isn’t allowed to grab a 45% funding rise when key workers are being denied pay increases, a more democratic future without hereditary privilege or power.”
