A successful new Liberal Democrat motion will enforce stricter rules on fireworks and pyrotechnics in Manchester.

The move will require all public firework displays to be advertised in advance of the event, allowing residents to take precautions for their animals and vulnerable people.

It will also encourage local suppliers to stock quieter fireworks for private displays.

Town Hall bosses will also write to the government, urging them to introduce legislation which would limit the maximum noise level of fireworks sold to the public for private displays from120 to 90 decibels.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Greg Stanton warned it is not just animals, but also people with dementia, PTSD and those who struggle with sensory processing will benefit from the new laws.

“Fireworks are a staple of countless events and celebrations throughout the year in Manchester but the effect of some fireworks on vulnerable people and animals, as well as the environment, cannot be underestimated.

“Currently, private individuals can purchase fireworks that explode at a noise level reaching 120 decibels. This is comparable to emergency service sirens and is 32x the level at which decibel levels can begin to be harmful.

“This is not about taking away the enjoyment of private and public fireworks displays, but rather ensuring everyone can celebrate in our city together without fear, stress or anxiety.”
