(11th of June) marked the return of the much-anticipated second series of Lupin, the show that sees Omar Sy star as Assane Diop in a retelling of the classic French story Arsene Lupin, gentleman thief and master of disguise.

Interested in seeing which city he would have the best luck in, OnBuy.com sought to find which city is home to the most valuable paintings by analysing the location of the most expensive paintings that have been sold.

Which city’s total painting value is highest?

Chicago tops the list as the city home to the paintings with the most value. Of the top 30 most expensive paintings, Chicago houses roughly over £528,446,625 worth of art. This includes the likes of ‘Meules’ (£82,428,581) and ‘Meule’ (£64,606,185) by Claude Monet at the Art Institute of Chicago, and sculptures such as ‘Rabbit’ by Jeff Koons (£67,840,088) at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Following behind Chicago is Paris, which is home to £527,727,650 worth of the most expensive paintings. Work such as ‘The Card Players’ by Paul Cezanne (£211,625,415) resides in the Musee d’Orsay, and Rembrandt’s ‘Pendant portraits of Maerten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit’ (£144,408,450) is shared by The Louvre and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Home of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the most prestigious art museums in the world, New York comes in third place housing £372,423,300 worth of the most expensive paintings. Showcasing classics such as ‘A Wheatfield of Cypresses’ by Vincent Van Gogh (£75,078,025) and ‘Au Lapin Agile’ by Pablo Picasso (£62,433,305) it is no surprise to see New York making the podium.

Despite owning just one painting in the top 30 most valuable, Abu Dhabi comes in at fourth place. Home of ‘Salvador Mundi’ by Leonardo Da Vinci, the most expensive painting in the world, it auctioned at £324,538,298 in 2017, meaning the value now is estimated at over £349,804,100.

Despite sharing the ownership of Titian’s Diana and Actaeon (£62,648,840) and Diana and Callisto (£59,415,815) with their Scottish neighbour’s, London comes in fifth place, housing £281,581,809 worth of the most valuable paintings.
