Local Cubs Pay Respects By Making Recycled Poppies

To commemorate Remembrance Day and pay respect to both past and present soldiers, the 16th Battersea Cubs were invited to City & Country’s The 1840 St George’s Gardens development in Tooting last weekend to place remembrance poppies, which they made from recycled materials, on the front lawn at the development.

The former hospital, now converted into The 1840 St George’s Gardens, was the site of the Springfield War Hospital during the First World War which treated shell-shocked soldiers and other injured men returning from France.* To mark the hospital’s contribution to the war effort and the services of the soldiers who stayed there, City & Country organised for the local cub group to create poppies made from recycled materials which they then installed at the development.

Jennifer Rhodes-Finch, Head of Marketing for City & Country, said: “Discovering and celebrating local history is always a highlight of City & Country’s work to restore and conserve architectural heritage. We are proud to be working with the local community to commemorate Springfield Hospital’s history and the sacrifices made during the wars.

“We’d like to thank the 16th Battersea Cubs for joining us to pay our respects by planting these poppies at The 1840 St George’s Gardens. The poppies look great lined up in front of such an historic building, and serve as a reminder of our history and those who have gone before us.”

Christine Masson, Lead Volunteer of the 16th Battersea Scout Group comments: “It was a privilege for our Cubs to join City & Country to place the poppies as an Act of Remembrance. With the Scout Movement having been involved in supporting the war effort in both the First and Second World Wars, we believe it is important for us to keep talking about this history and remember all who played a part. We thank City & Country for the invitation to be involved in this special event.”

The multi-award winning The 1840 St George’s Gardens has recently launched a new phase named ‘The Kitchen Yard’, offering one and two-bedroom individually designed conversion apartments, duplexes and terraced houses with meticulously restored original features, located around a private courtyard. Prices start at £480,000 for a one-bedroom apartment. To find out more or book a viewing, call 02038 116 170, or visit www.cityandcountry.co.uk.
