LIZ TRUSS’S LACK OF REMORSE FOR PUSHING UP MORTGAGE COSTS IS ‘ASTONISHING’ SAYS LABOUR’S ANNELIESE DODDS
LABOUR Party chair Anneliese Dodds has claimed that former Prime Minister Liz Truss has shown an “astonishing” lack of responsibility for pushing up mortgage costs following her controversial mini budget.
Dodds told GB News: “The lack of responsibility that’s been taken by Liz trust for the harm, frankly, that was impacted on people in our country is absolutely astonishing.
“We’ve seen now those figures showing that actually repossessions shot up by over a quarter, 26%, following that mini budget.
“Of course, that’s just a figure but for those families that meant losing the home that they believed was going to be theirs for many, many years, for decades.
“It meant that they ultimately suffered from that awful, awful financial impact. And it wasn’t a natural financial impact. It was one created by politics, created by Liz Truss and the Conservative Party.”
In a discussion during Breakfast with Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster, she also dismissed Truss’s claims about her government being hampered by unelected officials.
Dodds said: “That’s a bizarre conspiracy theory, to be completely honest. I think just about any economist or businessperson that you speak with would have a very different view.
“I would agree, however, that Rishi Sunak certainly hasn’t learned the lessons of that Liz Truss period because of course, he’s put forward a huge unfunded tax cut £46 billion, not saying how he would pay for that or whether it be putting up taxes elsewhere to pay for it or slashing public services.
“So, certainly, the Conservative Party’s got to do a lot more to learn from the impact, the awful impact of that Liz Truss period, particularly on family finances.”
Asked about the controversy surrounding Angela Rayner, she said: “I’ve got full confidence in Angela Rayner. I know that she will welcome the opportunity actually to set out all the detail on this.
“And of course, as you mentioned, there is a police investigation into this and she’s going to be setting out all of that detail.
“But you know, I have to say there will be lots of people watching this who will understand that families actually are created in many different ways.
“Families sometimes break up, families sometimes get together. That’s what’s happened with Angela Rayner.
“It’s what’s happened with many people, I’m sure watching this, and frankly, I just think that Conservatives here are trying to adopt a kind of plague on both your houses politics when most people are not that interested.”
