Health Tech Start-up Breaking New Ground in Kidney Disease Care
Kidney Beam, a UK-based healthtech startup, is redefining NHS patient care for adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). After three years of unwavering dedication, their solution now proudly stands as scientifically proven, and is transforming the lives of people living with CKD. Their groundbreaking research, recently accepted for publication in The Lancet Digital Health, demonstrates significant improvements in kidney disease exercise and lifestyle management.
Kidney Beam is not just another exercise app. It is the world’s first scientifically proven exercise and lifestyle management app designed exclusively for people living with kidney disease. This unique market positioning and rigorous scientific foundation have set them apart as true pioneers in the healthcare technology space.
In collaboration with the NHS, Kidney Beam has successfully completed a groundbreaking 340 person, multi-centre clinical trial, developed in partnership with King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and funded by Kidney Research UK. This trial included robust scientific research that demonstrated Kidney Beam’s positive effects on mental health, physical function, energy levels, and patients’ capacity for self-management of their condition.
Additionally, as part of their strategic path toward NHS commissioning, the Kidney Beam app is already operational in six out of eight renal networks across England. This partnership reflects the NHS’s recognition of Kidney Beam’s potential to revolutionise patient care in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
On a global scale, Kidney Beam is actively exploring international collaborations and pilots in countries such as Canada, the United States, Australia, and Italy. This international perspective holds the promise of broadening their impact and enhancing the well-being of people living with kidney disease worldwide.
One Kidney Beam user, Chris, shared his experience: “You start moving bits of your muscles you had forgotten about and you finish feeling on good form. As the weeks go by your body feels fitter and in a better shape. You begin to enjoy the company of your virtual friends, all trying to improve. It is a supportive environment. Thanks to Beam I feel fitter as a person. Everyone with renal challenges should join in for the structure, guidance and education – it is great fun.”
Dr. Sharlene Greenwood, Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Kidney Beam, states, “As a Co-founder of Kidney Beam, I am thrilled to witness our groundbreaking work being acknowledged and embraced by esteemed institutions like the NHS and The Lancet Digital Health. This recognition reinforces our commitment to revolutionising kidney health and underscores the potential impact of our innovative solutions on a global scale. Our ultimate mission is to place Kidney Beam directly into the hands of patients who have never had access to specialised kidney rehabilitation before. We are overjoyed to witness this dream becoming a reality, with thousands of patients already benefiting from our service.”
