Salford Civic Centre was lit purple, Sunday 31 May, to remember George Floyd and stand in solidarity with those protesting against racism and injustice across the world.

George Floyd died at the hands of police on Monday 25 May after he was arrested outside a shop in Minneapolis, United States of America.

A video recording has circulated showing George Floyd on the floor saying he was in pain and could not breathe, while a police officer continued to kneel on the back of his neck. This police officer has subsequently been arrested and charged with murder and manslaughter.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the black and ethnic community of Minneapolis, and those other communities throughout the world struggling against racism and violent oppression. We want to especially offer our deepest condolences to Mr Floyd’s friends and family. I cannot imagine what they are going through at this time.

“We are lighting Salford Civic Centre purple tonight to show our solidarity with George Floyd’s family and friends, the people of Minneapolis, and the communities in Salford and across the world struggling for liberation, respect, and freedom.

“Justice must be now served and incidents like this cannot be allowed to continue. There can be no justice in a society where the sanctity of life of citizens is not paramount.”
