First look at plans for ‘once in a generation’ transformation of Stockport Railway Station

Plans to create a landmark new gateway to Stockport have moved a step closer as Stockport Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) have launched a public consultation on the future transformation of Stockport Railway Station.

The proposals would deliver the most significant improvements to the station in decades, creating a modern, accessible and better-connected transport hub on Europe’s busiest rail line, that matches the scale of ambition and investment transforming the town.

The redevelopment is a key part of a wider programme of investment reshaping Stockport.

Alongside the arrival of Metrolink, the continued success of the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation and transformational projects such as the award-winning Stockport Interchange, the station will help unlock the next chapter of growth for Stockport as one of the best-connected locations in the North.

Over the past five years, Stockport has become one of the country’s leading transformation success stories as part of the UK’s largest town centre regeneration.

More than 1,500 new homes have already been delivered or on-site through the MDC, as part of plans for 8,000 new homes, major commercial development and thousands of jobs over the coming years.

The improvements to the station will include early-stage plans for new station buildings, a new footbridge, improved accessibility, better walking and cycling routes, enhanced public spaces and stronger connections between the town centre, Edgeley and the wider Bee Network.

Cllr Mark Roberts, Leader of Stockport Council, said it was an incredibly exciting time for the borough.

“Stockport is fast becoming one of the most exciting places in the country and Stockport deserves a station that matches that confidence and momentum,” he said.

“We’re setting the pace for town centre regeneration, attracting investment, creating opportunities and delivering projects that are changing lives.”

“Now we have the opportunity to transform one of the most important gateways into Greater Manchester and the North.

“We’re already seeing unprecedented investment and regeneration across Stockport, from new homes and employment opportunities to major transport improvements, such as the arrival of Metrolink and the creation of our award-winning Interchange. The station is the next significant project on that journey.

“This isn’t just about building a better station. It’s about building a gateway that reflects the confidence, ambition and pride of a borough that knows where it’s going and I hope everyone will take the opportunity to engage with the plans.”
