Fears of jubilee bunting shortage as stores sell out of street party essentials

Britain could face a bunting shortage this Jubilee weekend as retailers report a staggering sales surge of more than 4000% – with many products selling out completely.

According to latest sales data, Brits have been snapping up Royal-themed items like bunting, party hats, and cake stands at an unprecedented rate in anticipation of the bank holiday weekend.

Sales have increased so drastically that retail experts now fear there could be a shortage heading into the celebrations – sparking a nationwide scramble for party pieces.

Latest data from online Marketplace OnBuy reveals that sales of a £3.99 20ft ream of Union Jack bunting have sky-rocketed by a mind-boggling 4402%, resulting in the product selling out completely.

Elsewhere, sales of Platinum Jubilee-themed button badges costing £1.49 have surged by 1442%, while purchases of a Union Jack tablecloth, retailing for £5.88, have increased by 800%.

Similarly, purchases of a Union Jack flag costing £5.16 have surged by 2487%, while party hats, fancy dress items and cocktail sticks have also been flying off the shelves.

Tamreen Hasan, Category Manager of Party Supplies at OnBuy, said the rush for products is a result of Brits across the country frantically preparing for Platinum Jubilee parties next weekend.

She said: “The rate at which people are purchasing Jubilee weekend essentials is genuinely staggering, it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen.

“Our retailers have seen an extraordinary increase in demand for bunting. One retailer saw sales of bunting increase by more than 4000%, while other bunting sellers have seen increases of 2487% and 608%.

“And it’s not limited to bunting. Purchases of jubilee party hats have increased 450%, while cake stand sales are up 400%”.

“Some of our retailers are even selling out of products – The public has gone jubilee crazy!

“If sales maintain their current rate then we could very well see a shortage of certain items as the celebrations get closer, with bunting right at the top of the list.”

The historic Platinum Jubilee celebrations are being held to mark 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II was crowned.

From 2nd to 5th June, festivities are set to take place across the nation, ranging from street and garden parties to the lavish Platinum Jubilee Pageant at Buckingham Palace.

This is the first time a British monarch has celebrated a Platinum Jubilee, with Queen Elizabeth II remaining on the throne 13 years longer than Queen Victoria.
