With its resplendent and striking appearance, the Fifa World Cup trophy has come to symbolise the pinnacle of the most popular sport on earth. But what do we know about it? Is it really made of gold? And how much is it worth?

After taking a close look, goldsmiths and jewellery experts at UK retailer Steven Stone have revealed everything you need to know about the gold award.

The prestigious trophy is solid, made up of 30,875 Carats of 18 karat gold. It has a base of 13cm, which features two strips of malachite – one of the most powerful transformational crystals in the mineral kingdom.

There have actually been two iterations of the trophy. The original – the Jules Rimet Trophy – was in place from 1930 to 1970. Following their success at the 1970 World Cup, winners Brazil were allowed to permanently retain the Jules Rimet Trophy, which was later stolen. The current trophy took its place at the next tournament in 1974.

I’d estimate the gold award to be worth approximately $1,000,000 – making it likely to be the most expensive sporting trophy.”
