Easy summer hairstyles whatever your situation

By Nicole Petty, Hair Expert at Milk + Blush

Styling your hair during the hot summer months can be troublesome at times, with soaring temperatures causing hair to go frizzy or greasy.

But that doesn’t mean we should give up on trying new hairstyles.

Summer brings a world of opportunities to try new, cute and fun hairstyles that we wouldn’t normally go for in the winter. Plus, after months of lockdown, it’s about time we had some fun with it!

Here, Nicole Petty, Haircare Expert at Milk + Blush reveals some easy summer hairstyles for you to try whatever your situation…

If the heat is making your hair go wild…

Embrace the sunny weather and humidity with some easy beach waves. A hairstyle that requires little effort is perfect for the summer months as the weather gets warmer.

After all, who wants to be sitting for hours in front of a mirror, only for the humidity to destroy it seconds after you step out the door?

For this style, simply fix your hair into a loose braid overnight, unravel in the morning, add some sea salt spray and lightly scrunch from root to end for an effortless, carefree wave.

For keeping your hair off your head…

If you’re someone whose fringe or bangs are likely to get greasy quickly, try styling the front of your hair into a French or Dutch braid.

Start by giving your hair a little more grip by adding dry shampoo to the mid lengths and ends of your hair, divide the hair from the side you wish to start into three sections and begin plaiting, adding in new pieces of hair as you go.

This style will look chic and girly while keeping your hair off your forehead!

If you’re a bit in between…

Keep your hair half up and half down for a style that will cool you down but still look glamourous.

Create a rectangular section on top of your head by using a fine toothed comb to make three straight parts in line with the temple on either side of your head and one at the back, gather the hair from that section into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic hair tie. Next, twist the ponytail around itself, wrap the ends around the base and secure with a few bobby pins.

For extra style points, either curl the ends of the remaining hair or simply leave your hair to hang naturally.

To stop your neck from getting hot and sweaty…

Putting your hair up doesn’t have to be boring, it can be super stylish, too! A slicked back bun or ponytail will look gorgeous while keeping all your hair off your neck when it’s getting a bit too hot to handle.

For a ponytail, secure with a thin elastic hair tie and smooth the ends with extra product to keep it sleek.

For a bun, twist your ponytail around the base of the bun, pulling as you twist, secure the ends with bobby pins and add some extra hairspray to keep it in place.

And if you’re looking to take even more effort out of creating this style yourself, why not try out a fake ponytail?!

This style is super original, will never go out of style and can be worn for day or night.

For a chic but cool style…

All the rage at the moment, the bubble ponytail gives the high ponytail a much needed update for when you’re looking for something a little bit different but still having that sweaty neck problem.

Slick back your hair from the root, keeping your bangs out if required, and place in a high ponytail by brushing back, adding styling gel or product and securing with a thin elastic hair tie. Next, split the ponytail into sections using small, thin elastics and use the end of a fine toothed comb to fluff out the segments and create a balloon effect.

This style is super glamorous, but also romantic and flirty so can easily be pulled off during the day or at night.

When you don’t have the time…

A messy wrap braid ponytail is perfect for those days when it’s hot and you just can’t be bothered.

Create a ponytail slightly to one side and leave out two inch sections of hair at the front on each side. Next, grab the two pieces of hair and bring them back into the ponytail, loop the sections around one another on top of the ponytail, pull them underneath and secure with a clear elastic.

More is more…

If you’re feeling bored then add some cute summer accessories such as a head band, clips, or a headscarf.

Headscarves are a great way to protect your hair and scalp from the sun, while adding a fun twist your outfit.

For summer it’s all about being super creative and fun, so embrace it and use your headwear to give that final touch to your outfit.
