Dr Karl Kennedy on health, final scenes in Neighbours and appearing alongside Kylie
NEIGHBOURS favourite Adam Fletcher has told of the shock at being struck down by alopecia saying: “Fans were worried for me.”
Adam, who played Karl Kennedy in iconic Aussie soap, told GB News how he suddenly developed hair loss.
He said: “It was very quick. I had some patches disappear in my beard and I went to the doctor…eventually of course. I’ve had fans concerned about my health.
“So I did a video explaining alopecia, and it’s a good thing I did I think because a lot of people actually suffer in silence so they mask it.
“They wear wigs or whatever and they don’t talk to people about it or they get mercilessly bullied.”
“I look at myself in the mirror and I think ‘who’s that bloke?’, but it’s a weird thing, particularly when you lose things like eyebrows – it’s a bit disorientating, but luckily I’m of an age where I sort of go ‘well it is what it is’.
“But for it to happen to a young six-year-old girl or whatever, or a six-year-old boy, it’s pretty tough. And apparently, it happens to a lot of women after childbirth.
“They have patches but luckily, mercifully, a lot of people get their hair back.”
The actor also told Isabel Webster about the emotional last few days of appearing on set.
“It was extraordinary at the last day of filming, I can’t even begin to tell you – drive into work, it’s a 40-minute drive and you’re sitting there trying to suppress the emotion of being your last day because you know, you’ve got to get the you got to do the work, be professional and the last scenes were very upbeat.
“So you’ve got to keep all that down and then suddenly you hear someone say, ‘okay, cut. That’s a wrap’.
“Yeah, and that’s it. And that’s it. You think, ‘that is it’, so I quickly grabbed a photograph on the bookshelf, which belonged to me, as I can’t leave that behind and a few trophies, and that’s it.”
Alan revealed he also previously appeared on-screen with Kylie when he was called in at short notice to play a mechanic.
“It was a short three-week part,” he said. “They didn’t have a mechanic on Neighbours for three weeks and so Kylie with being an apprentice, she needed to have a supervising mechanic, so they brought me in.
“I got to work with her and it was divine. She was so sweet. All the cast were wonderful. I knew a lot of them and I’ll never forget them. I later asked Kylie one day how she was doing, what was going on in her life, and she said she’s very excited because she just released a song called Locomotion.
“It’s extraordinary where it all went, isn’t it?”
