According to recent reports, Crystal Meth, or ‘Tina’ a deadly drug, is growing in popularity among Manchester’s party scene. The drug can have devastating consequences for a person’s health including mental health issues and death in severe cases.

Amid the news, a new study from the team at Private Rehab Clinic Delamere has looked into drug deaths from 2017 to current figures, and worryingly in Greater Manchester, deaths related to drug poisonings are up 54%.

Not only that, but during the five-year period, between 2017 and 2021, when looking at the number of drug deaths across the North West, SIX of Manchesters’ 10 boroughs featured among the top areas with the highest rates of drug poisonings.

According to the data, the city centre of Manchester, recorded 281 deaths relating to drugs since 2017, meaning that the borough landed in second place on the list.

Also among the top 10, was Wigan with 154 deaths related to drug poisoning and landed in fifth place, as well as Bolton, which landed in seventh place on the list and saw a worrying 138 deaths related to drugs over the past 5 years. Tameside followed closely behind in eighth place with 136.

Further down the list were Salford and Rochdale, which both saw 129 and 124 deaths related to alcohol respectively since 2017.

Other areas that made the top 10 included Liverpool city centre which took first place, with a staggering 333 deaths related to drugs over the past fives years.

Methodology: Analysing ONS figures on drug-related deaths, we have discovered the number of poisonings by area in the UK from 2017 to 2021 which are the most recent figures published.
