Captain Marvel named favourite female Marvel character on Twitter

Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers – played by Brie Larson – has been named the most popular female MCU lead on Twitter, according to new analysis.

Film Franchise Crossovers looks to name which blockbuster franchises – including Marvel, Star Wars and DC – are best-suited to an onscreen collaboration, based on their profitability, popularity and format, as well as which characters from each franchise are fans’ favourites.

The study included a Twitter Sentiment Analysis, which pulls together all Tweets referencing a franchise film across the last decade and assigns a positivity/negativity score to each.

The study revealed that Captain Marvel, aka Carol Danvers, has seen the highest influx of positive support from fans over the last decade when compared to any other female character – including Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Agent Carter, Gamora and Shuri.

This is interesting given that Captain Marvel – the MCU’s first female-led film, starring Brie Larson – was met with apprehension and then significant pushback from fans.

On the other end of the scale, it was Jessica Jones, Shuri and Mantis that have seen the least support online, suggesting they haven’t yet struck a chord with fans.

Top 5 most popular female MCU characters

1 – Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers

2 – Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff

3 – Thena (Eternals)

4 – Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff

5 – The Wasp/Hope Pym

When it comes to the popularity of the characters featured in upcoming release, The Eternals (5th November), the analysis reveals it’s Angelina Jolie’s Thena that has seen the most positive reception on Twitter, followed by Dane, Diego and Jack.

Eternals characters that are yet to make an impression with fans – but may prove more popular when the film hits cinemas – are Sandra, Sprite and Kingo.

As well as looking at the popularity of Marvel characters, the study also reveals which big-name blockbuster franchises would be most compatible were they to ever share a screen – looking at the likes of Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Fast & Furious and James Bond.

The study also looks at the potential earnings resulting from these crossovers, and names which franchise films – of all 116 analysed – prove the most popular with fans online.

And it was Ghostbusters Afterlife that took the top spot, having seen the highest influx of positive Tweets over the last five years than any other franchise film, including Avengers Endgame, Dark Knight, and The Fellowship of the Ring.

Other key findings from the analysis include the characters that are best-suited to a potential onscreen interaction, the highest-rated franchise films, and the highest-earning franchises.
