BEE-UTIFUL LEGO® TRIBUTE TO FOO FOO LAMMAR TO CELEBRATE MANCHESTER PRIDE

To mark Manchester Pride, 23rd to the 26th of August, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester is thrilled to unveil an extraordinary tribute to one of the North West’s most beloved entertainers, Foo Foo Lammar.

Designed and created by talented Master Model Builder Jacob McPeake, the dazzling LEGO mosaic of drag queen and entertainer Foo Foo Lammar stands at am impressive 89cm by 89cm and is complete with a rainbow border and a giant 3D bee, symbolising the city’s vibrant spirit and this year’s Pride theme, “Buzzing to be Queer!”

The mosaic consists of a mammoth 9,216 LEGO pieces and showcases the intricate LEGO greebling technique, which includes smaller pieces to help enhance the aesthetics of the creation.

Built in approximately 18 hours the awesome mosaic highlights Foo Foo’s colourful persona, featuring their trademark blonde bouffant wig, iconic dangling earrings, and sharp wit!

Foo Foo Lammar, born Frank Pearson, was a legendary figure in Manchester’s entertainment scene and played a pivotal role in establishing the city as one of Britain’s leading LGBTQ+ areas.

Becoming one of the UK’s most beloved drag acts throughout the 1960s, Foo Foo then purchases his first club in 1971, which quickly became a premier nightspot for Manchester United players and showbiz stars.

Not only was he known for his electrifying stage presence but also for his philanthropic efforts. Lammar tirelessly fundraised for charities like the Christie, where he was treated for cancer before passing away on November 7, 2003, at the age of 65.

Jacob McPeake, Master Model Builder at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Manchester, said: “We are beyond delighted to unveil this tribute to Foo Foo Lammar. Their legacy continues to resonate throughout Manchester and beyond.

“Creating this mosaic has been an honour and I hope it brings joy and pride to everyone celebrating in Manchester this August. It took a lot of imagination and over 9000 LEGO pieces to create the artwork, so to see the final creation is really special.

“We decided to incorporate the bee, an emblem of Manchester, into the mosaic as a symbol of the cities resilience and community spirit. On top of that, this year’s Manchester Pride is ‘buzzing to be queer’, so it fits together perfectly!”
